is this safe?

Posted by sam K on January 17, 2009, at 0:11:50

Im on zoloft 75mg right now and doing good, but am running into side effects. First of all I have an eating disorder so this could be that. My pants are getting tighter(eating a bit more), Im more tired, lack of motovation.
I was on lexapro a few weeks ago and it was fine. Can I combine Lexapro and zoloft? I know about serotonin syndrome. I had it one time when I took effexor with alot of buspar. I was very angry, disosociated and hot.
Can I combine these two together safely? Im thinking yes but I should be careful. I also have to look at my motovations for this decision because it might be my eating disorder. I want a way out of feeling fat or like Im gaining weight.

Its not a great idea to have two SSRIs on board -- if the Zoloft is not working the best for you, and you are interested in trying Lexapro, why not ask your doctor to switch to it?

I'm hoping, but making no inflammatory comment, mind you, that you are under a doctor's care since you are framing questions you should probably be asking your psychiatrist.

Weight gain is possible on some SSRIs, Paxil is most notorious. But (and its pot and kettle for me), exercise is important too, and may give you more motivation and vice versa.

Most people don't realize they have serotonin syndrome. The dissociation, and heat (if it was a high fever) are signs of clinical SS, but sadly people are so disoriented they don't often realize it.

I would definitely say if you've experienced this before to not go down that road.

Just an opinion. Yes, some doctors I imagine do combinations, but I wouldn't play with fire, literally so to speak.

As for the eating disorder -- well, if its anorexia, or if you started out being rather slim, weight gain can be more pronounced I believe than those otherwise, but I can't say for sure

Agree with Jay call your pdoc. Also low doses very low of two SSRI's were combined for me. But seriously extremely subtheraputic like 7.5mg paxil and 12.5mg of luvox. Phillipa

i don't think its a risk, just a waste. an alpha2 antagonist or bupropion instead.

Hi Sam!

Glad to see you posting, I was away for a bit as I said. PLEASE don't let your eating disorder drive you to make dangerous or risky choices. Its just not worth it. I would check with your Doc but I have the feeling due to your disorder you may not always be able to or want to. Tell your Parents. Call a hotline. Ask to be seen by someone. I'm sure your Parents would arrange it. If they're not around, get some emergency care.

That was really smart of you to check first, but we don't know what other meds you may be on etc. Do you have back-up telephone numbers for your Docs? I would call PDoc first if you run into this situation again and can't reach anyone.

Okay? Post anytime but also check with your Doc before you take anything!

In case I didn't tell you before, you can Babble Mail me anytime, even just to talk. Do you know how to use it? Find a post I've made, anyone, then click on it, then click on my name in blue. Be sure to send at the BOTTOM of message so I'll get it .Try it out anytime. Its just a back and forth conversation like now but its private and it will show up on my email. Maybe I'll send you one to see if its working.

Take care of yourself ;-)

~Jade
