Seroquel effects at very low doses

Posted by mav27 on October 20, 2008, at 8:09:18

Just wondering if 25mg of seroquel has any effect at all on dopamine and seratonin receptors or does it have no effect at all until higher doses ?
I take just 25mg a night for sleep so i'm just curious if it does have any other effect at this tiny dose.

Seroquel has a wide dosing range typically to 800mg. At 25mg you're only getting the effects of an antihistamine / muscarinic receptors and possibly the slightest amount of serotonin if at all (some people believe it balances the sleep cycle). The dopamine Ki constant is so high at that point that you're getting close to nil.

Its a starting dose for taking Seroquel though for its intended (or off label purposes), at about the 100-200mg level you do start getting D2 effects.

I'm surprised it even has much of a sleep effect at that low dose.

Interesting...so which part makes it so difficult for me to try to reduce Seroquel 25 mg to 12mg? It results in crying, despair, anxiety?

Could it be the calming effect of the antihistamine or could it be the small amt of serotonin??

My other meds are EMSAM, lithium 600mg, ativan.

Thanks

12.5mg knocked me out in the middle of the day. And then l00 split at night didn't let me sleep even with benzos on board hospital setting. Phillipa

My guess it is the calming effect of the antihistamine and that whatever you are taking the other medications for, I'm guessing some sort of depression, you get a temporary breakthrough depression period from the shuffling of the "soup" of medications by virtue of the antihistamine drop, even with the load of medications.

Antihistamines can be activating for some such as cetirizine, the metabolite of hydroxyzine (Atarax) and /or calming -- Atarax used to be used for anxiety among other things, so I believe it is more that.

But that's just a guess. I doubt its the serotonin in that small a dose of Seroquel.
