Okay, so I'm not on any meds at all right now (pdoc approved) and haven't been for 2 years. As of last Thursday I've been having a dysphoric manic episode, the first one in at least 5 years. Normally I get mildly hypomanic. So, what with this ridiculous amount of energy, ruminating, sort of obessive thoughts (smoking a specific number of drags from a cigarette), irritability, and extreme anguish - I have no clue what to do. I've called the necessary people but I can't get an appt soon enough. I don't need to go inpatient yet, so that's out for now.
The ruminations are the worst. I can't STOP thinking about this one specific person, and it's giving me extreme anxiety.
So can I take a .5mg risperdal? Will it do anything? I took a xanax last night and it basically knocked me out to the point where I could finally sleep, but it's not the best solution and I only have 2mg left anyways.

Risperidone could definatly help with that, do you have a good supply? You might need more than .5mg.

I've got about 30 of them, maybe more. What dose would theoretically work?

.25 might well work; I think the dose usually goes up to 6mg. Have you taken it before, has it helped you before? Hopefully you can see your doc soon.

I'm going to try .25, and see what happens. I've taken it before, first time in '97 to 99, second stretch in 2005-2006. Honestly I couldn't tell how well it worked, given that I was taking it with a larger cocktail of an AD, mood stabilizer and perhaps cogentin. I'll repost if at the end of the day to report what "happens". I just want a brief reprieve from ruminations and anxiety, not a magic pill that destroys mania. So hopefully my realistic expectations play a role in it's effectiveness... ;)

Wow, this is promising. I took .25 mg at around the time of my last post, then laid down for a nap. I didn't sleep much because I kept having strange dreams that woke me up. But I slept some. Anyhow, upon waking up I noticed a marked change in my mind, perhaps even a little bit of happiness poking through. I'm afraid to take the other half of the .5 mg pill, being aware that more is not always better. I suppose I could see how .25 does it for me tomorrow morning and take the other half later on if it isn't enough.
The ruminations are still there, but they're easier to shut off and they don't come on so strong. The anxiety it almost totally gone. So everything is kind of in the background.

Hi Charles,Sounds like yr having some luck there with a tiny tiny dose too.25, so no concern with TD EPS, great.
You mentioned taking it 97-99, 05-06. Did you find it difficult to quit? i wonder what dose you were taking?

I don't remember what I took early on, but the more recent time I took 1mg a day, which is also a tiny dose. I think the 1997 dose may have been 1mg BID.
I've never had much of a problem quitting anything but effexor.
As to my current situation, I think tomorrow most definitely warrants a .5mg dose. This .25 dose did the trick partially, but I think a slightly larger one would be better.

2mg a day is often the iniating dose for major thought disorders, with a usual range of 4-6mgs day.

This .25 dose did the trick partially, but I think a slightly larger one would be better..25 may kick it, if given some time, (try dissolving it sublingually) but i wouldn't worry over .5-1mg, a Psynurse told me 1mg is low dose, where she frequently sees up -8mgs being used, i wonder if you have experienced any movement disorder type symptoms?.
Good luck, thoes ruminating, merry go round thoughts can be nasty. Let us know how it goes?

However, going any lower than 0.5mg is likely to be ineffective for what you are experiencing. You might need as much as 3.0mg. I would start at a minimum of 1.0mg given your present state. I think most doctors would start higher.
Why are you choosing to use Risperdal?

Well I chose risperdal because a) it has worked for me in the past and b) of all the medications I have in stock, only risperdal is relevant.
It definitely took the edge off yesterday. I took at total of only .5mg as I seem to be very sensitive to it. When it was prescribed to me, I was only on 1mg per day, and even then I had problems with tremors etc.
This is the end of the thread.
