I'm still loving DEPLIN anybody else??

It has been since 12/2007 and the Deplin is great. I take it with Lamictal, which I had to cut back on. Are there others who are taking Deplin? and still getting a great response? I want to know if other people have had the same experience as I have.

It is clear you didn't read my post. That hurts my feelings. If you are going to make comments, I would feel better if you read what I wrote. I forgive you. I know you post about 200 times a day. Reading what somebody else has to say can be distracting.

Hadn't heard of this stuff before you posted and I googled it. Fascinating stuff. Does your insurance cover it? Apparently most won't, since it's a "food" not a "drug."

Henyro I did read what you wrote and sorry your feeling were hurt I was questioning if you were only on Deplin and lamictal. So many seem to be using it with a long list of other meds. It's exciting that it's working with just lamictal. Phillipa

I've never heard of Deplin but it seems to be helping some of you guys on here. Where do you get it? Is it a nutritional supplement or a drug?

Thanks,
Dwight

Hi Dwight.

Deplin is a "medical food" containing the active ingredient, l-methylfolate. Deplin is available in the US by prescription only.

It is well known that many people with depression are low in folate. However, folic acid is too "weak" to get into the brain and be transformed into l-methylfolate, the active form of folate. However, Deplin quickly crosses the blood brain barrier and is already in the form that the body can use. One should not expect to glean a robust antidepressant response for a few months. I think the best candidate to try Deplin is one who is already partially responsive to a standard antidepressant treatment. Deplin seems to be an augmenter rather than a monotherapy. At least, that is the current usage of this naturally occuring substance.
