Geodon + Risperdal Users - PLEASE HELP

Posted by Michael Bell on August 13, 2008, at 11:39:00

I apologize for having a similar post just recently, but nobody was responding, and I need to make a decision very soon about which med to take, so I decided to post again. So if you have have used Geodon or Risperdal, or both, please see read below:

I have been put on Risperdal, and then Geodon for some paranoid ideation and occasional bouts of anger. I am having trouble determining which one to pursue. Please if you would be so kind, can you give your input on how effective each of those drugs is for the following symptoms:

- bouts of anger
- feelings of pent up frustration
- feeling like you are being looked at, evaluated, etc. by the people around you

Also, how long did it take for the medication to become effective, and at what dosage?

Thanks so much

P.S. For those wondering how the trial of pharma-grade Oxytocin is going, I will post that in the coming weeks

i'll respond but i'm sorry i'm not much help.
risperdal did absolutely nothing for me.

and i was only recently on geodon.
i thought it was working for me at 80mg (and it may have been? or it was left over from zyprexa that i know works) but then pdoc upped to 160 and i became psychotically depressed, i realized it was probably the meds so after a week of h@ll and not being able to get ahold of pdoc i took myself back down to 80. less psychosis but still majorly depressed.
so pdoc took me off completely (withdrawls of chills hotflashes headaches, nausea and anxiety). and then i recently went back to zyprexa just because i was in danger and we know that zyprexa works, even though it is a weight gainer and major sleeper for me.

so i guess what i'm saying is we are all different and respond differently.
i guess my only advice would be to be cautious of going up too high on Geodon. maybe stick with 40 or 80 (i think 80mg is the typical).

and as far as hearsay goes i think i've heard more people say they found help with risperdal than with Geodon. at least more people reported being on it. not sure if it worked for them or not.

sorry not much help.
but i at least wanted to respond.
FWIW

and i am very interested in your trial of Oxytocin...i know that i was perfectly fine when i was pregnant and nursing and wondering if it has to do with prolactin (and dopamine) and was just thinking about who here was trying either L-DOPA or Oxytocin trials.

yes Very interested in this. please let me know.

Michael you've been left hanging for two day. Personally haven't taken either med but know someone who takes geodon and it calms her fear. Sorry I don't know more. And I'm sure you've googled it. Love Phillipa and yes would love to hear about your oxytocin trials. Phillipa

Michael,

I took both Risperdal and Geodon, but stopped both meds rather early (Risperdal after about a week and Geodon after one day) because I found them to be intolerable. Basically, the Risperdal worsened my depressive symptoms, and the Geodon actually worsened my psychotic symptoms. I'll try to respond to your post as well as I can based on my limited experience with the two antipsychotics.

Neither medication seemed to affect anger in any significant way.

Risperdal seemed to reduce these feelings to a small extent, and Geodon seemed to exacerbate them.

I noticed Risperdal's antipsychotic benefits after one or two days (I can't remember it that well), and I took doses of .5 mg and 1 mg. I noticed a strong increase in psychotic symptoms (especially visual perceptual disturbances) on my first day of Geodon. I forget what dose of Geodon that I took, but I refused to take it for longer than a day because it made some of my psychotic symptoms that much worse.

this is exactly what Geodon did with me. i was getting visuals of me committing S., bombarding me throughout the days, it was HORRIBLE and other weird visuals, and these were NOT daydreams. more like flashbacks, very intrusive and uncontrollable. Also some just weird visual weirdness focus issues, and i also got some auditory weirdness too, (voice thoughts etc.)
overall increased psychosis.

that was at the 160mg.

Thanks for the replies. I notice that Geodon makes me tired beyond belief, although it does so far seem effective for controlling anger and the "they are looking at me and talking about me" issues. I guess I have to continue on it for more time to see what happens. The doctor put me on it b/c the risperdal was making me tired, but the Geodon seems just as bad in that respect.
