Quit Nardil, back on Celexa. Strange side effect.

Posted by Girlnterrupted78 on June 26, 2008, at 17:50:08

I quit Nardil and I'm back on Celexa. Nardil wasn't working and it was only making me gain weight.

Ever since I began Celexa I'm experiencing some strange feeling in the area of my head around my jaw, throat and back of my head.

It's like a chronic feeling of grinding my teeth (mostly my molars) but it extends back towards my throat and occipital area. So I'm not really grinding my teeth, but rather some muscle in my head is involuntarily tensing hard all throughout the day, to the point it makes me tired and gives me some discomfort and a mild headache.

It feels like tourette's syndrome, but I'm not sure if that's what it is.

Has anyone experienced this side effect on any antidepressant?

Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I just realized that this muscle tension in the neck, throat and jaw appears to be a common side-effect of Celexa that I never knew about.

I found this old thread:
Painful stiff neck from Celexa, any advice?

What I don't understand is, I was on Celexa for 5 years before starting Nardil, and I never EVER experienced this side-effect.

Now all of a sudden I go back to Celexa and I start having it! How could this be? No matter how hard I try to relax my neck muscles, it is the inside of the neck/throat and the inner part of my jaw that is involuntarily tense.

Geez. I wish I had never tried Nardil. It almost ruins my life, made me gain tons of weight and now it ruined Celexa too.

If anyone knows how to get rid of this tension, I'd really appreciate any advice. Does it go away after the first weeks, or is it a permanent side-effect?

Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't know it either. Maybe someone will answer who knows as I was on it for a month and was so tired couldn't walk and spacey. Phillipa

I apologize also. I noticed a couple of days ago your thread had no responses and meant to post too.

I'm normally a jaw clencher and tooth grinder. Some meds cause me to to this more and my jaw and the muscles around it were always stiff and sore. That could be what's happening to you. You could try wearing a mouth guard when you sleep and see if that makes any difference.

I've never had success at revisiting a drug again. They just don't seem to work the same as before...If it's working well but causing you to clench your jaw, it may be one of those side effects you have to live with and try different things to get some relief...and hopefully it will stop once you've adjusted to the med.

This is the end of the thread.
