MRI and ability to determine brain damage per ECT

Posted by Zeba on June 14, 2008, at 11:26:57

I am just now leaving the house to go for a brain MRI to see if there is any brain damage and/or to make sure there is not a tumor. I have had problems with olfactory and visual hallucinations on and off since I had ECT. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem.

Neurologist and psychiatrist think I may now have a seizure disorder. MRI is without and with contrast, and so we shall see.

Did they do an EEG too for seizure disorder? Good luck. Phillipa

I did not have those problems, but suspect brain damage, from ECT.

I think an EEG is down the line.

I am scheduled to do neuropsychological testing too, but I can't get in to see the person until the first of September. They have me on a waiting list to get in sooner though.

Weird thing is that after they did the MRI part with the dye, I felt an ache in my head in the exact areas where they hold the bars or whatever they are called that give you the shock for the ECT. One on the right side sort of in the middle on top of my head and in the right temple. The shocks they gave me were five times the seizure threshold level. I never should have agreed to taht. The headache is gone now but that was the weirdest thing. Since the brain does not feel pain, I don't know what it was.

Have you thought of getting neuropsychological testing done. My neurologist agrees we may not see anything from the MRI. She thinks it will show up with the neuropsychological testing, especially tests related to memory. I still have disorientation too and can't find my way around town after over a year of stoping the treatments. I was getting rage episodes too where I would not recall what happened afterwards. Those are mostly gone or at least not as frequent. This is another thing that has them wondering if I am having seizures. I don't think so, but who knows.

Are they letting you drive without knowing if you have seizures as that could be quite dangerous both for you and others. Phillipa

I am not having them now and have not had them for several months now. The main thing is the memory stuff and whether or not I might have a tumor. The seizure thing is way down on the list right now.

I should have mentioned as well that I have not had grand mal seizures, just weird smells and what looked like wavy movements on the computer screen or blurring of vision. The latter has not occured in at least nine months. It is not the sort of thing that leaves you incapacitated, just annoying things.

Please let us know when you back the results from the MRI. Those are certainly odd symptoms, but something tells me there's nothing serious to worry about.

Just got the results yesterday, and as both the neurologist and I predicted, the results show nothing of significance. I am very relieved. Thanks for asking.
