I like Abilify, and I feel guilty about it. Is it wrong to *enjoy* taking a neuroleptic? Am I hiding from my emotions? Its just that...suddenly, I don't have mad agitation and what not. Sometimes I feel a little too numbed out, but not in a creepy way (I feel like reducing the dose might help).
Is Abilify any different than other neuroleptics? Is that what's going on? I thought people were supposed to hate antipsychotics and just take them b/c they had to. What's going on?Thanks in advance.

Nope. :)

hi medemp. I also enjoy taking abilify. I noticed immediate difference when I added it (5mg) to my regimen about 10 mos ago. Much less agitation. Then I increased it to 10mg when I had a little ptsd episode. I noticed this instant calm. not zombified, not benzo-tranquilized, but just calm.
Relief is sweeeet!
Am I a bad person for liking wellbutrin? ;)

I know what you mean, it's almost like enjoying being restrained and tortured, but I don't see why you should feel guilty about liking a medicine that makes you feel better. I certainly don't feel guilty about liking codeine. Or low-dose amisulpride. :-)
I don't like Zyprexa, Seroquel or Abilify because they made me feel so awful. Abilify was particularly evil, but I gather it's having a different effect in you. I think perhaps we associate them with other pleasure-blocking drugs like naltexone, and possibly as tools of social control, hence the sinister overtones. That and the serious side effect profile.

for giving me insightful responses. Quintal--you're right on about my view of neuroleptics as tools of social control...and Abilify is still very much a neuroleptic. I still have fears w/ this med...I fear TD, NMS, etc., but its works so well. I'm just afraid that the "taming effect" of neuroleptics is creeping up on me, and that I'm "taming myself" into docility.
But whatever...as best I can tell, Abilify is pretty OK on the TD front (can anyone give me specific numbers? I may try a switch to another drug/lower dose if the risk is too high...). I'm afraid of tardive akathisia, too....all in all, I'm still hoping to be able to eventually be neuroleptic-free and get on something a little less hardcore.
But, for now: Abilify is pretty impressive.
Thanks again.

I'm glad it's helping you. Don't feel guilty. It's just another med in your toolbox to help defeat those terrible feelings. Roslynn

So Abilify both relieves and causes agitation?
Maybe the types of agitation in question are different?
This is the end of the thread.
