Geodon (called 'Zeldox' here) now avail in Canada!

Posted by Jay_Bravest_Face on April 1, 2008, at 9:59:41

"Pfizer announced today that Canadians with schizophrenia now have a new treatment option. Health Canada has approved ZELDOX (ziprasidone hydrochloride), marketed under the brand name "Geodon" in the US for a number of years. The medication is now available in Canada for the treatment of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders."

Finally....

canada is very regressive and losing touch. we should have at least one antipsychotic without H1 affinity, something people would expect canada to have, yet we don't.

The fact that canada has price controls on their drugs means that fewer new drugs actually get to market. There is less monetary incentive for drug companies to get approval for the Canadian market. Its an unfortunate aspect of certain country's healthcare systems. It's good that some new drugs do eventually get approved.

Although I don't know the details of Canadian medicinal pricing policies, I think drugs are only subject to fixed prices if there are agreements - between the drug company and public health authority - to subsidise the drug. Of course, drugs that aren't subsidised may be prohibitively expensive for many patients, but the same problem exists in the US where there is a patchwork of different insurance policies, each covering a different and arbitrary range of drugs.
