I was given the generic Wellbutrin by my pharmacy. After reading horror story after horror story, I tried to return them yesterday and get the name brand (no can do--can only return same day). I haven't taken any of them yet, but I am terrified to do so since I keep reading about the generic causing anxiety (among other side effects) and I want to avoid that since I have major anxiety problems. I paid out of pocket for the name brand (quite pricey) so I have a back up.
I haven't read anything good about the generic and wanted to know if anyone out there has actually had a good experience or if everyone is still having bad experiences.

Once you leave the pharmacy here they won't take a med back. I didn't know generic vs real was an issue with wellbutrin. One week of which don't know put me in the hospital at 150mg. Anxiety. Love Phillipa

At some of the boards on the web where people rate and comment on their meds, yes there are people who did well with generic wellbutrin and were glad it was generic. Looking at the big picture it seems to me, anecdotally, that the preferred version is Wellbutrin extended release. Even though there is plenty of evidence that people can tell the difference between brand and generic, there are people who do better on the generic. And vica versa. I don't think there is much question they are somehow different. But trying to predict one's own response based on what happened to other people is hard to do.

I am taking the generic wellbutrin, and didn't really have any side-effects to speak of. A little bit of upset stomach and tremors the first
2 days, then nothing after that. Also, there are many different generic brands of wellbutrin, so it may be a matter of finding the right one.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be helping my depression either.

There probably isn't much of a difference between the brand name and the generic wellbutrin. People who say there is a difference may be ones who are more susceptible to a placebo effect.
They recently did a study and found that people responded better to a placebo when they thought it was a more expensive pill. So this may also be the case for wellbutrin. People only think the brand name is better because it is more expensive than the generic. Both the brand and generic contain the exact same molecule, so there probably isn't a huge difference in the side effect profile.
