Mianserin and Mirtazapine extend lifespan

Posted by linkadge on December 12, 2007, at 22:27:58

In worms at least.

Apparently, the effects of the drugs mimic the effects of caloric restriction, through modulation of 5-ht2 receptors.

From what I understand, the drugs turn on the same genes that makes the worm think it is in a starving mode. I am assuming the worm is fed the same amount of food, even if its appetite is increased by the drug. I would also assume that this effect would be counteracted if an increased number of calories were consumed.

Anyhow, see what you can make of it.

Caloric restriction in a mirtazepine fed population is more likely to be successful with worms than humans?

Sorry not sure what you mean. If you mean that it is easier to control the diets of mice than of humans, I think you're right.

But mirtazapine is notorious for making people famished. Everyone I know who's tried mirtazapine has gained a lot of weight because they're constantly ravenous. It seems to work opposite in humans to the way it works in worms.

It may make the worms starved too. My take is that the preception of being starved, releases some sort of chemical that increases longevity.

I havn't read the original study, but I am assuming that overeating would cancel out the effects.
