Still no luck with nardil

Posted by mav27 on December 5, 2007, at 20:48:51

Darn it this is getting frustruting. After suffering social phobia all my life (now 27) i've been on every AD imaginable with no luck what so ever. Untill i tried nardil. My first attempt earlier in the year i went up to 60mg in the first week and after 3 weeks i was great, and sociable but the side effects hit bad such as hypotension (70/40) fainting, tinnitis. I couldn't get out of bed without fainting.

So i tried again recently. I've been on 30mg for 7 weeks with no effect at al so i went up to 45mg.. after 4 days i was sociable again and felt good.. 2 days later the side effects hit.. whislt i'm not fainting this time the dissiness lasts for ages, i go completely deaf and blind for about 2 minutes,, the tinnitus is with me 24hours a day and this time(unlike last time) my whole body feels like i've run a marathon with uscle weakness all over and just sever fatigue... it was so bad i've had to drop back to 30 and yep you guessed it i can't bring myself to talk to anyone (including family members) again.

This is just becoming a joke :(

Sorry i forgot to add, i've talked to the doc abotu adding a stimulant for the hypotension whoever this isn't something really common in Australia so he has to look into it, i presented him with some links provided by this site.

However we are worried about it making the insomnia worse as i can only sleep about 2 hours a day with a nap of 1 or 2 in the arvo and it's making me feel terrible. We have tried seroquel, zyprexa and all the benzos including rohypnol and nothing worked in the slightest.

Sorry you're having so many side effects. That's why I stopped taking Nardil and switched to marplan. WHen do you take it? I just told someone in another post that when I took Marplan twice a day I had a lot of problems with lightheadedness and couldn't even go out of the house. I went to Walmart one day and had to run out of the store because I thought I would faint and end up in the hospital. I never had it as bad as you, but could you try to take it throughout the day? Maybe three or even four times? That helped me so much. I couldn't even walk up stairs without seeing spots. It was an awful feeling. And I also have tinnitus really bad in my one ear, but Nardil didn't make it worse, only Marplan.

Anyway, I'm sorry you're having a hard time. Please try spacing out the dose and see if that helps a little. I never did that with Nardil. Maybe I should have.

Take care,

brooke

aren't MAOI's strange..when I was on Parnate I had terrible hypotension and muscle weakness..sometimes when I got up to let the dog out I had to crawl on my hands and knees! Now I'm on Nardil and I have no hypotension..but insomnia is getting bad..

How are you spacing your dosage out? Maybe some tweaking with that will help..When I was on Parnate I ended up taking my whole dose in the morning and for some reason that helped the hypotension..

I also didn't think Nardil was going to work for me but then it kicked in after about 3 weeks and it's just getting better and better..I hardly used to leave the house before and now I'm out and about..even went on a date! Unheard of before..maybe if you can stick it out and play around with your dosage schedule, it may kick in yet..best wishes for you

Hi,
I know everyone is different, but the orthostatic hypotension I had as a side effect of Nardil only lasted a few months. The Nardil actually lowers my borderline hypertension, so I don't have to take another med for that. I take 90mg of Nardil, 2mg of clonazepam, and 25 to 50mg of Seroquel. I believe the clonazepam plus the small dosage of Seroquel really helps my insomnia. I still get tired sometimes in the late afternoon and end up taking a nap. This does not seem to make my insomnia worse at night. I wake up a little groggy on the Seroquel, but a couple of cups of coffee takes care of that.

I have had social anxiety since I was in junior high school. That is about 37 years of fighting that one. I've also had dysthymia since high school. My first major depression did not hit until I was about 40. IMHO Nardil or Marplan (both affect GABA) plus clonazepam (also affects GABA) are the best combination for fighting treatment resistant atypical depression and social anxiety. Again your mileage may vary, but the combination is worth a try.

A lot of the side effects of Nardil take many months to lessen. I don't believe the sweet carb cravings and delayed orgasm ever really go away completely. If you increase your dosage too quickly the side effects can be unbearable, and you have another worthless med trial.
Good Luck,
Jedi
