My experince when i was diagnosed 3 years ago...
I didnt even know i had it. I thought i just had full blow ADHD, and i did. That was my first dignos. as kid when i was 7.
Something about Bi polar manic episdoes is they are somethimes not controlled by you, there not you, you chose to do things that are not normal that is considered normal, like staying up nights because you have the energy, and you "want" to.
Some other things, your personality changes. And you are talking to someone who has gone through i mean personality changes. Being agitated, mad, rage, then happy, then sad. There you have it. In about an 4 hour time period. Thats for me.
Benzodiapines exept Clonazepam, i want to say is proably the best thing to be treated with manic, some time Lorazepam (Ativan) but its not as strong as clonazepam (Klonopin). Klonopin does make your mood flat, like depressed but it brings you down from the agaitedness you have. My doctor is big on Klonopin, the only reason i take xanax is i was on klonopin for 3 years and i just could not take the depressingness effect it.
Lamictal, and Depakote are good too. But the best are Antimanics, such as zyprexa, lithium, and abilify.
Lets start a talk about this...

>For the record, Zyprexa and Abilify are anti-psychotics which are also used for bipolar.

Tried lamictal and it did well. Cant take it anymore because of insurance reasons. Depakote works well too even at low dosages. 50mg of seroquel works well. Was at school and thought I was just homesick but come to find out the rage, insomnia and increased energy came from me being bipolar when I thought it was just insomnia.

I did well on 300mg of seroquel, but gained too much weight. Geodon was *okay* but VERY sedating, which did not go away after several months, plus I got horrible side effects when pdoc raised my dose from 180 to 240. I thought I was going crazy.
I've been stable (?) on abilify for about 3 mos now. I take klonopin when I get super agitated (which happens several days a week). I also take it when I get very anxious, but usually I try to isolate myself to deal with anxiety.
After I got out of the hospital pdoc started me on accelerated taper of lamictal for the depression phase of bipolar, so I take lamictal and zoloft for the depression stuff and lamictal and abilify for the hypomania, and I'm still trying to find a way to deal with the agitation. I've just joined a gym, and am hoping to exercise all the agitation out of me.
old pdoc said that "one day there will be a bipolar diagnosis for people like me". great. I can hardly wait for DSM-V. Like I didn't have enough problems already.

Lamctial (sorry misspelled) i have heard is really good, but i heard there is some side effects to it.... like rashes and stuff like that.. you know?
The 2 medications that i think would help me, but i am just a little hesitant to go on them is Lithium, and Seroquel. I think they would both maybe help, but hey listen, im a lithium weenie, im scared.
I dont want to take a medication, like one time i took Zyprexa mmmm 15mg...... i didnt feel much (no the zyprexa definerlty worked), i was just, it just, i never wanted to feel that deadness again.
What are some antidepressants that are given for manic depressives?
Oh and one more thing. There are times that i am, not off the walls, im so out of energy i need something to stimulate me to help my work. Its like a wave.
Wellbutrin i know does possess some stimulating props. but........... the anxiety it gave me was horrible.
I think i just need to just slow "down" stop thinking about this problem, maybe im blowing it out of preportion.
but thanks....and i would really luve a response.

Fan sometimes I believe you don't need an antidepressant the lamictal works for that as well and the rash is very rare and you have time without complications for getting it treated. Just titrate up slowly. From either l2.5mg or the normal 25mg. I've tried it and no rash for depression. Phillipa

I have tried many mood stabilisers and the only one that didn't have nasty side effect and worked is Trileptal.
You could also try Lamictal.
If you found the right mood stabiliser you probably wouldn't need an AD. That's why lithium is a good choice because it helps depression and mania.
Good luck at the doctors.

Phillipa is right. The lamictal rash is very rare and you would probably be able to ditch the prozac!
