I made mistake of calling my pdoc to thank him

Posted by Meagan on September 16, 2007, at 11:00:20

Hello everyone,

Last week when I saw my pdoc I had no hope that any medication could help lift me out of my depression. I am on mood stablizers in addition to requip and prozac. But my prozac had pooped out.

My pdoc prescribed 5mg selegiline to take for seven days and then take 10 mg selegiline to start the the following week.

I had an initial good response on day one and two, and on day 3 I left a message thanking him and I told him he was a genious. But he called me back to say that I should not go up the extra dose of selegiline since I was getting some response.

But I told him, the initial response, though good has not fully taken me out, and that I was looking forward to the extra dose. But he said not to go up. I was so upset, I said, I can't wait a month to see if this is going to be any better, because it usually doesn't get better, i'll need more. We agreed to revisit the issue in a week.

So the moral of this story is: don't call your pdoc and thank him, because it can backfire on you; and make you more depressed, just when you thought you had hope that a particular drug would work and that you might have a robust response.

I want to be resilient and self-confident again, not just hovering in purgatory.

Meagan if you feel confident I'd go up but the question about the prozac was I'm thinking trying to avoid serotonin syndrome as you don't want to take SSRI's and an MAOI. Did you doc mention this. Lets see what responses you get from some experts certainly not me. Phillipa ps I understand being upset as if something worked for me like that I'd want to do the same. Did you question uour pdoc for his reasoning? He was planning on stopping prozac wasn't he?

Philippa, Sam 123,

Yes, I 'm on 40 mg prozac and my doc explained to me about the risk of serotonin syndrome, but he says Selegiline in low doses is given to Parkinson's patients who are on prozac, and the risk of serotonin syndrome is very rare.

He even said if I did well on selegiline, we could wean me off Prozac, and I could even go on the ENSAM patch, if I needed that high a dose.

When he called me to tell me not to go up to 10mg of Segeline, I asked him what was it about my phone call to him that caused him to call me and tell me not to go up! I mean, he NEVER calls me except for when I call him.

He didn't answer that question directly, but just said selegiline can be cumulative, and that it might take longer to feel the full effects. Basically, he said I should see if it will work at the lowest dose possible.

That's all well and good, but I'm certainly NOT getting the robust response that I had hoped for. I know its only been 5 days (I would have gone up to 10 mg this Monday) but I want to get the same response that I got with Prozac fairly immediately - I became self-confident and resilient, and then after 2 years, poop out. I mean I would have gone up to 10 mg tomorrow, BUT FOR THE FACT I CALLED HIM TO THANK HIM!

I hope my pdoc is going to get me there again, and not consider where I am satisfactory. Although I probably shouldn't be so impatient, but depression can really slow you down, especially when you were striving towards goals you wanted to achieve before the depression hit.

never call your pdoc to thank him
if you experience a sense of well-being, call someone who will appreciate hearing from you
