Extreme Drowsiness with Geodon

Posted by girlwiththecurl on August 5, 2007, at 18:03:00

Hello, I started taking Geodon 4 days ago. First 3 days I took 20 at night, then after noticing immediate extreme drowsiness called pschiatrist and told to increase to 40, again at night. I am still so tired. I slept 11 hours last night and still woke up in a fog for 3 hours! Usually I don't have the opportunity to do so, as I have a small child. What should I do? I know that paradoxically this side effect can be decreased with increased dosage, but it hasn't happpend yet. By the way, I am still having a lot of angry aggressive episodes- yes, I know it's still early in my new drug therapy. One more thing, I take 200 mg of Lamictal and 30 mg of Prozac. I have been diagnosed with chronic depression and still am undiagnosed type of bi-polar disorder, but have been told it's not manic, bi-polar 1 nor 2. After lots of research, I am thinking I should propose Borderline Personality Disorder to my doctor. Help me please! I want to be able to live and not be asleep or angry during it! I want to be able to spend quality time with my child and husband instead of being irritable from my condition compounded with the prescriptions that are supposed to help me rather than hinder me!

If you were drowsy on twenty mg why increase it to 40mg did you leave something out? Phillipa

No, that's correct. Like I said, my doctor told me that paradoxically increasing the dosage would actually help me and decrease the chances of sleepiness- sounds odd I know. Also, I made a mistake; I'm on 80 mg.

Okay, I have an update. Talked with the doctor today... now, I'm off the Geodon. Great, no more sleepiness, but more of a headache trying to find an Rx that works! This is so aggravating!

You know I read a post tonight that the higher the dose of geodon the less tired you get . It's on the board somewhere. Love Phillipa. What med does he want you to try now? I have a pdoc appointment tomorrow and imagine I'll be going through some of what you are.

Yep, I guess it's out there. Well, last night, the most common side effect I've seen on this message board for Geodon- insomnia finally set in. My last dosage of 80 mg was taken Sunday night, I had slight insomnia that night, but nothing major. Then last night, whoa! I thought the white coats were coming to get me! I didn't sleep until 4:30AM even after that I wasn't in a deep sleep. Luckily, my little one decided to sleep in too, but still it's hard to be a mom with no sleep! Brings back horrible memories of newborn/ early motherhood! Anyway, called the doctor with my list of problems today and was told to take 25 mg of Xanex, wait an hour, and repeat if it still didn't calm me down and stop the racing heart and thoughts. Well, here I am, almost 4 hours later and I am not tired, but don't have the racing heart or thoughts. So, wish me luck on sleeping tonight and finding a drug that works better with my system tomorrow at the doctor. What did you doctor end up prescribing today?

Oh that sounds horrible so glad your baby slept late and the heart stopped pounding so scarey. Well not what I expected actually not much. Stay on the luvox but up it and then switched to valium to 2mg of xanax divided during the day. Love Phillipa

curly girl, I started out just like you 20-40-60 120 180 240. Drowsiness NEVER went away. I waited 4 months. You can try asking your pdoc for an Rx for provigil. it has far fewer side effects than coffee. you won't feel so angry as when you're drowsy AND caffeinated.

Your dx sounds a hint like mine. I'm doing really well on abilify, and just took my farewell dose of geodon. (let the withdrawal begin?!)

best wishes, and good luck with the little one.
