I'm currently at 20 mg and would like to increase again as I'm not happy with the results so far at 20..
I'm booked for surgery on Sept. 12 and my pdoc told me I have to go off it two weeks prior to my operation.
My questions are:
Should I stay at the same dose and feel kinda crappy until I have to go off it before surgery..it will be easier to go off, I would think, going from 20 mg than 30..
Does anyone know what the chances are it will not work again for me once I have the surgery and restart it? I've had that happen with SSRI's when I've tried to go back on, but not sure about MAOI's..
Thanks in advance..

Have you checked with the surgeon, or tried to get in touch with an anesthesiologist from the hospital? The anesthesiologist told me that as long as he knew about the MAOI, he had no problem my remaining on it. I went off Parnate before surgery, but for other reasons. But apparently the warnings are based on older anesthetics, and surgical patients who had not told the surgical about their MAOI.

Does it happen with MAOI's too? After that what choices are there hope they work again. Love Phillipa

I did not have to go off of my Parnate when I had surgery to correct a deviated septum from a broken nose. The anesthesiologists (some) are not keen about this, but they can make adjustments so that one can be on Parnate and still have surgery.
In fact, I am on 40 mg. Parnate now and plan on having surgery on my left thumb joint down by the wrist in probably October. I don't plan on going off of the Parnate.

I'm having surgery where I will be under for over two hours..I'll call the surgeon tomorrow and ask..I know my pdoc told me I'd have to go off it before surgery..so here I sit..not knowing whether to try an increase cause I'm really, really blah..or just suck it up until September..my history of antidepressants pooping out or not working the second go round has me more concerned than being off it for a couple of weeks..
I had some early indications parnate would work for me but am beginning to wonder over the last 3 or 4 days it that's going to be the case..hence, my wanting to increase it to see..if no better results, then I won't feel so bad about stopping it..
As for other options if it doesn't work again..who knows..been on most classes with limited success due to poop out or intolerance to side effects..
Thanks all for your input..

I was on Parnate in the past, and it is working for me again now. Someone suggested talking to an anesthesiologist to see what that person has to say about going off Parnate. My experience is that some will say yes, and some will say no. They just can't give you certain things. My pdoc at the time is the one who told me I did not have to go off the Parnate.
When I had surgery in the mid 80's and was on Parnate, I had to get off it for two weeks before. It was awful; I sank into a deep depression, but as soon as I got back on the Parnate, after a couple of weeks, I was back to being better again.

I believe as long as the anesthesiologist knows you are on Parnate, they can work around it. I had surgery while on Nardil and it was no problem. Jedi
