What next After Lexapro and Prozac?

Posted by gritslad on June 12, 2007, at 17:58:56

I've been on various Ad's for the past 17 years for mild depression. Prozac was my favorite--worked for years but finally petered out. Lexapro was my 2nd fav, but seemed to peter out too. Doc put me on Cymbalta. I've been on it for 2 weeks and am clinching my jaws, not sleeping well and am constipated. Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa did little to nothing--well Paxil made me pack on weight.

Do you think after a 2-3 year break, Prozac might work again for me? Other suggesttions?

Gee I'd hate to think that after a few years away from a med that worked for you that it wouldn't work again. I guess you just have to try it and see. Love Phillipa

Actually, that is one theory -- that taking a break from an SSRI will allow it to work again. It's very possible that Prozac will work again, and that will settle your problem. It's certainly worth a try.

"SSRI poop-out" is a common topic of discussion, and there's finally been some research done about it. I don't know that there have been any results yet, but at least someone out there is thinking about quality of life issues, right?

If I were offering advice, of course, I'd suggest giving Cymbalta a chance first. I say that mostly because you're actually getting towards the end of the start up phase problems, in my experience, and it can be a good drug. It seems a shame to stop it and start another trial without giving it a chance. I was on it for a year and a half, and it was the single kindest antidepressant I've ever been on. Fewest side effects by far out of my long list of drug trials.

Good luck if you do try Prozac again, though. I hope it does work again for you.
