Nuanced emotion

Posted by FredPotter on June 14, 2007, at 15:54:48

When I was depressed I was flat and empty. Now I'm better thanks to Nardil and capable of nuanced emotional responses to real happenings in the here and now, like crying at things that are sad (not relating to me all the time). So the idea that ADs make you a grinning idiot are quite wrong IMO Fred

I've never heard anyone say that Fred, people usually say ADs (particularly SSRIs) make them feel flat, numb and emotionally detached - like a clockwork orange. As you've pointed out, feeling flat and empty is a symptom of depression for many people. Fortunately MAOIs work differently and make you feel like a normal, functioning human being again, as do opiates and some other tightly controlled (and 'obsolete') pharmaceuticals. I think they're the real deal.

Haha In a sense I feel like I've found myself, but in reality I'd never gone away. The real me was always locked up inside - - waiting. Forty years is a long time to lose yourself and then find yourself undamaged. Of course there have been long periods in between when I've been content

Hi Fred

I am thrilled that you are feeling better!

When you say that "idea that ADs make you a grinning idiot are quite wrong IMO", I assume you are talking about people who have never been on an AD. These people call them "happy" pills and think they magically make depression disappear and that you should be all better because you are on meds. Is that what you meant?

I wouldn't mind being an unnuanced grinning idiot for a bit, and if there was something that could have done it, I would have tried it in a flash.

Those people definately exist. I know a bunch of grinning prozac popping idiots.

I feel like telling them, if you're grinning all the time, I think you need to cut the prozac in half.

Maybe I should revise my prejudices?

That's it exactly - the pejorative happy pills myth. How are you feeling these days Maxime? Fred

Yes I think the aim is to smile when good things happen and cry when sad things happen and get angry in response to injustice. I've had a troubling time with my kids recently and I've done a lot of crying, but the difference is, the crying was appropriate and not about me, me me. In a word, empathy
