My next door neighbor has had anxiety for years and been on 6mg of xanax and lexapro low dose. Well at the same age as I was her lexapro pooped out the xanax she needs more of. Called her pdoc and he said that anxiety comes before depression. first time I ever heard a pdoc say this. He's switching her to effexor. But the irony is it's at the exact same age as I was menopaual 52. So does that explain anxiety and panic first. Comments Love Phillipa

Isn't it obvious that anxiety precedes depression, PJ?
There are plenty of anxious kids out there but not so many depressed ones.
The reason it's said to be the other way puzzles me, but perhaps relates to fashions in prescribing practice.

I'm not sure it's a matter of which came first. Anxiety and depression are often mixed, but since the anxiety symptoms usually require the most immediate treatment, anxiety is treated first.Greywolf
