Ok - so drugs that effect serotonin give me bladder spasms and urine retention (ouch). I love the way Lexapro and Effexor make me feel, but I hate the spasms.
Are there any drugs that barely touch serotonin or that effect serotonin in an indirect way?
I've heard Abilify.
Also - I tried Elavil and it gave me the opposite effect - it relaxed my bladder so much that I way running for the bathroom - almost had a few accidents.
I want my serotonin without the spasms and pain.

I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to treat. Depression? Anxiety?

Wellbutrin is the first AD that comes to mind. For the most part the TCA's are out, except perhaps Desipramine (Norpramin® and Pertofrane®) . MAOI's are all dirty drugs, like Effexor, so they are out.
The other norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (NRI's, don't of weakly touch serotonin) on market are Atomoxetine (Strattera,Attentin), Maprotiline (Deprilept®, Ludiomil®, Psymion®), Reboxetine (Edronax®, Norebox®, Prolift®, Solvex® or Vestra®) and Viloxazine (Emovit®, Vivalan®, Vivarint®, Vicilan®). I'm not sure what country you are in so I also listed brand names from other countries.
Reboxetine was not approved for use in the US.Interesting that you get this problem with serotonin effecting AD's, norepinephrine effecting AD's are associated with urine retention. norepinephrine effecting AD's are my mainstay AD and I do have hesitation/retention just a bit at first and this totally goes aways with time.
So I would say Wellbutrin would be a good next trial or Desipramine, There are generic's for each. Wellbutrin seems to be well liked for its
lack of side effects. I take it and have no side effects from it.The novel approach would be Lamictal, and antiseizure med used on label for bipolar and off label for depression. I think it is more reasonable to work through the AD's first but
wanted to give you as many options as possible.

Hi, thanks everyone. I am trying to treat depression and anxiety. I get easily hypo-manic, so I have to be careful with ADs. I am trying a very low dose (1mg.) of Abiify as I like the sleep I get on it.
I wish I could take Effexor or Lexapro because I love the way I feel on them.
Lamictal would be great, except that it makes me break out in the dreaded rash.
I have Trileptal, but I don't know if that really helps.
Anyone get any help from Trileptal?

I missed the part about your BP, so many of the AD's I mentioned would not be a good idea or would need a mood stablizer.
Welbrutrin seems to be the one BP people can take without causing cycling.
This is the end of the thread.
