Ended up having EKG for chest pain, sweating, twiching. The pdoc is on vacation this week but called him and he said the internist again. EkG okay. And he said it's anxiety. So BP up and rapic pulse too. So asked about lyrica he said only for seizures and pain. And also no ad for at least three weeks . This is the new pdoc. Love Phillipa

As I explained to you Phillipa, the internist probably isn't psych drug savvy (nor is the new pdoc judging by his performance so far). He'll probably have looked in the PDR and seen indications for pain and epilepsy and not thought of off-label uses. Lyrica is licensed for anxiety in Europe but not yet in the US for some reason. Many people here have been prescribed Lyrica off-label for anxiety and depression.

I'm sorry to hear you're having so many problems. I find that Lyrica decreases my blood pressure and helps with anxiety and is a good add-on to very low dose doxepin for sleep (I also used it with trazodone and it made sleep better, too).
Quintal is right that your doctor probably doesn't know the off-label indications. My old pdoc was leary of prescribing it because of it being Schedule IV and new. Though he was prescribing Klonopin to me with no qualms. I think there are lawsuits regarding Lyrica and suicidal behavior. It may have cast a pall on pdocs prescribing it off-label.

it seems like if it works on GABA, the only benefit would be if it was more tolerable than the benzos or cleaner or not restricted. Its schedule V I think, so there are some restrictions, and its expen$ive so..I don't see what all the hooplah is about.
Anyone find benefits from lyrica that you don't get from BZDs?

I think some of the benefits of Lyrica are on mood where most benzos tend to exacerbate depression. It's also effective for people with anxiety and depression who also need non-narcotic pain control, reducing polypharmacy. I suspect it may also be useful for people who have developed tolerance or poop-out with benzos as a substitute or an augmenter. To those people it may be worth the extra cost.
