Adderall and selegiline interaction

I've read the following in plenty of places:

"Do not use Adderall if you have used an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), or selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam) within the past 14 days. Serious, life-threatening side effects can occur if you take Adderall before the MAO inhibitor has cleared from your body."

This may sound like a dumb question, but does it follow that if you're already on Adderall, should you wait 14 days to start selegiline?

There's no such thing as a dumb question. How else are you going to learn anything?

The answer is no, it does not follow. The MAO inhibitors destroy the enzyme that helps metabolize amphetamine. You can seriously overdose without that enzyme clearing the drug from your body. It is thought to take a couple of weeks for the enzyme to be produced in sufficient quantity to operate within normal parameters once again.

What's important in going the other direction, is the half-life of Adderal, roughly twelve hours. Given that five half-lives is the generally accepted time-frame for effective clearance of a drug from the body, waiting three days should be adequate, even for the XR version of Adderal.
