Anti-psychotic poopout treat as SSRI poopout?

Posted by slinky on March 25, 2007, at 13:57:35

Hello..

After a few months on 1mg Risperdal I think it may be pooping out as I have symptoms returning.

If the dosage is raised as with SSRI's will it work again?

Slinky.

Hi Phillipa,

I've read on forums that some folks had poop out with Risperdal..I don't know about the other anti-psychotics.

I don't know if raising the dose is a good idea. If its "pooping out," that usually means your brain is changing, and with antipsychotics that could mean that you're D2 receptors are up-regulating, which puts you at risk of "super-sensitivity psychosis" if you continue to up the dose. Then again..if you need symptom control, you need symptom control. Have you tried any anticonvulsants? Adding one in might keep you from having to up your dosage.

Hi,

I'm currently taking Gabapentin which helps with some anxiety.
In the past I've taken Topamax, Carbamazipine, also Lamatragine, zyprexa. I have suggested to my doctor Seroquel but he is dogmatic in that he doesn't try anything new. UK doctors are difficult creatures.
Strange combination of effexor may be causing problems - I take 75mg of effexor xl at night but in the morning 37mg of the normal non timed release, maybe he did this incase I got too high.
Maybe the 37mg of effexor needs to be stopped.
