Here is the scoop.
I was on amphetamines for 10 years. My mother took me off it cold turkey because of abuse.
Its been 1 year now, its miserable. I take Xanax 6mg, Prozac 30mg, Temazepam 30mg, Zyprexa 2.5mg
I go nuts i cant handle, i dont know how to organize, maybe stimulants are not for me, but they did efficantly help for the 10years i was on.
Maybe Prozac 40-60mg for this OCD. And i do have ADHD, but im learning to cope, but im coping badly right now.
I am so depressed during the day, omg i just want to forget about psychostimulants.
My doctor has it doctumented in my record of some stimulant abuse. I will have to explain why. I cant with my mom she will tell the entire family im on speed.

Dont we go over this every couple months with you? Im sorry that your mother is controlling but letting your OCD obsess over what you once had and cant now isnt going to fix the situation.

I too have OCD, and also take xanax for anxiety.
MY pdoc took me off of Luvox, an approved SSRI for OCD becase of side effects, and instead put me on 40 mgs of lexapro a day. Recommended dosage of Lexapro is 20 mgs a day, but as my pdoc explained, studies in Europe have found high doses of Lexapro to be helpful with OCD.
It has definitely helped me with my obsessional thinking, and the compulsions have diminished as well.
I still have my moments where EVERYTHING MUST BE IN IT'S PLACE, or ELSE, but for the most part, it is under control.

Nolegirl So lexapro at 40mg. You know I hear a lot of good things about this med. No side effects. Anxiety, insomnia? Something maybe for me to try. Thanks. Love Phillipa

What side effects did you have with luvox? What was your dose? I have anxiety with pure "O". It hasn't been terrible but mainly I have music in my head that won't stop (very annoying). Thanks

Yes Phillipa, I love this med.
I find it to be very sedating, even when I was on lower doses ( I take it at night). It also helps with my anxiety.
My pdoc says that it is well tolerated by most.

Some people find Luvox to be very helpful, and some find it to be sedating. For me, it was a nightmare.

Amphetamines can cause obsessional/compulsive behavior so I do not think they are used for OCD.
Anyhow, you are already obsessed enough with amphetamines. They tend to bring on mania, not treat it, and the bipolars I know that use amphetamines
find it make the cycling worse.

Sorry to ask so many questions but what doses of luvox did you try? Did you have any start up anxiety on lexapro and if you did how long did it last? Thank you.

I have not talked ever about OCD and amphetamines. So please be "civil" ok.
I have talked about psychostimulants which im probaly not going to ever be prescribed again, so why try to lay off.

Im actually for this time period im not going to go back to stimulants. They did help....with organzing, and helping me focus on what im doing instead of going with hell breaks loose. Many other things, kept my mood in a stable position for a while but, when they where off i rerember... the dysphoria you have.
Dont think i am, even though it would really help, i think im going to up Prozac.

Hi,
I upped my luvox and here I am wide awake after two hours of sleep. Weird feeling too. I am so disappointed and don't know where to go from here. luvox is making things worse. How long do I try this?
How long did you last on luvox? I don't know if I can function like this......

Did you ever try anafranil for ocd. Today was very bad for me. Things finally quieted down at 3:30 so this is very trying. I took my luvox 25-mg to see if I get agitated again. I may have to try something else, maybe lexapro. I just don't need insomnia and anxiety at higher levels. Please let me know how the lex is going. Thank you

I think I was on luvox for about 2 months before I said ENOUGH, I need to sleep! I actually started my own tapering without my pdoc's permission (he was out of town..).
I was never happier than the day my pdoc took me off of luvox and put me back on 40 mgs' of Lexapro per day. I think I asked him to marry me ! LOL
He did say that if that dosage of lexapro didn't work, than we may try 60 mgs' of Lexapro. (Studies in Europe have shown that higher doses of Lex has shown to be an effective tx in patients with OCD).
I had NO start up anxiety when I initially started taking Lexapro, as a matter of fact, I found Lex to be extremely effective in the treatment of my anxiety. I would venture to say that it piggy backed my xanax and increased the efficacy of my xanax. I felt so calm, lexapro had such a soothing effect on me. I LOVED it, and still do.
Unfortunately, I no longer have the extremely calming effects that I had when I started taking lex. It is still very calming, but not like it was when i first started...
I stand by Lexapro 100% and for me, (FOR ME ONLY, we all have different experiences with meds), I think that of all of the SSRI's, and ASRI's that I have tried, I love Lexapro the most.Good luck, and don't feel bad, if you have questions, ask!
I get so much from this site, and I love to give back when I can!BTW - many other people have had a great response to Luvox. I don't mean to undermine the efficacy of Luvox in terms of it's benefits for the population in general.
For me, IT DIDN'T WORK !Also, I have never tried anafranil for ocd. I think I am happy with my current med combo:
- 40 mgs of Lexapro
- 200 mgs of Lamictal
- 4 mgs of Xanax XR
- 50 mgs of Vistaril, as needed for sleep.

Thank you so much for the response. It was so needed with the problems I am having. My main dx is really gad/anxiety but it manifests itself in some Pure "O" stuff. I am a worrier but it does come and go. Lately, I have an ear worm which is due to the John Mayer concert! I often gets song in my head that will last quite a long time. I just learned not to fight them and let them run their course.
Anyway, I digress. Today I felt a little better but woke up early with a very anxious feeling which I have not had in quite some time. I am not going to chuck the luvox yet but I do hear positives about Lex from others too. I also heard it was approved for ocd so that is a plus. I do not find it to be sedating either. I am new to ssri's so everything is new and scary for me.
I understand we are all so different so we just have to give it a shot. Hard to think that we tunnel vision creeps in and I think I will never get better. I will keep fighting. Again, thank you for the response.

I had to go back to .5 mg of klonopin last night as I couldn't fall asleep. I wasn't having this problem before the luvox. I broke it up into a .25 before bed and was having a lot of chest anxiety. When I woke up at 3 I took another .125 and since we are snowed in I took another .125 and went back to bed. The chest stuff has subsided but luvox just doesn't appear to be for me. I know it is early but the insomnia is a problem. At least before I was getting 4 to 6 hours of sleep. I may, this is kind of scary, but quit the luvox which would allow a cut back of the klonopin and just take some afte I wake up in the middle of the night. At least I could get about 7 hours that way. I do worry about depression from klonopin though.
I have often wondered if taking an ssri keeps one from depression if they take a benzo? Kind of a balance ya know?
One odd thing is that after i woke up I started to get hot and very warm. This has happened before and I thought it was just anxiety. Didn't you mention you had hot flashes or something? This was very odd. It was like I could feel myself heating up. I have a theory this body temp rise is waking me up. Weird that is for sure

Happens to me too so I sleep in just a shirt and my theory is it's my thyroid since it didn't happen til it got screwed up. Love Phillipa
