Topamax and Hair Loss

Posted by bulldog2 on December 31, 2006, at 19:19:17

My p-doc wants me to start topamax for bi-polar2 disorder. I'm currently on 2 mg klonopin a day for anxiety. Hopefully the topomax might have some ad properties. Won't do lamactil because of the deadly rash possibility. I've heard hair loss is pretty common and my head of hair is the only thing left that okay right now. Are there any supplements or vitamins that might prevent that?

The lamictal rash is very rare. As long as you increase the dose very slowly. Could you take trileptal? Love Phillipa

Topamax isn't generally first line. You could try trileptal or slowly taper up the lamictal (the rash is rare) or even just up the klonopin if your BP is minor enough.

I'm fairly well-read on drug profiles. Hair loss is one I tune into. I've been on Topamax for a couple of years, also bipolar, but as opposed to mood stabilization, I take it for migraine prevention mostly.

No hair loss, and it isn't something my pdoc has seen, nor have I seen it in any of my crazy friends also taking it. I'd be more worried about the eye issues, honestly. I did experience that initially, even went to the eye doc - but found it to be a non issue.

Best of luck,

It was at 100 mg dosage. I am now trying to increase again. I have a severe tremor. Doc says he has patients that have had hair loss...but, now, they take zinc and selenium. I am trying that now. So far, no problem. The hair loss thing may be dose dependent and individual dependent. Hopefully, you will not loose any like the other poster. For me, it was sudden and scary. It was just like a cat shedding. I had to put a stop to it. I decreased to 50 mg and so did the shedding.

I talked to the topamax people and they claimed that men rarely have this side effect or at least has not been reported by men.
