Seroquel Experiences

Posted by chiron on November 17, 2006, at 13:39:30

Are there any positive experiences out there on Seroquel, and how long did it take to notice? I just started taking it again for my agitation.

I really liked Seroquel. I am in the process of coming off it to go to Abilify, but I am only switching because Seroquel was becomming extremely constipating (at 200mg) and I could not imagine going up more.

I started on a VERY low dose for anxiety -- I noticed very strange dreams every time a dose was upped. I then began relying on the drug more for quasi-psychotic symptoms (ie: paranoia). Under those circumstances, I (and my doctors) noticed an improvement within a couple of days.

Good luck.

It has really been great for my anxiety. This just may be me, but the lower the dose, the more effective it is.

I've been on Seroquel for almost 2 years. At first I mainly just took it for sleep. But eventually I upped the dose because of severe agitation and depression. It has helped somewhat, especially in combination with lithium.

However, I've been trying to get off it for a while because it makes me sleep A LOT, like 10-12 hours, which really sucks. That doesn't happen to everyone though. But I really can't stand sleeping that much anymore.

strong word...but i'm happy it is working so well for you.

I started at 200 mg, was very lightheaded and cut back to 100 and then 50. I have felt better at the lower doses too. I am decreasing the dose on my own since I don;t think I really need it. I won't stop it but I will hold at 50 until I see my pdoc in a week.

Why do docs always want you to take higher rather than lower doses of all drugs? What is their incentive? I have proven time and time again that lower doses are more effective for me. I was on seroquel when I started Emsam and I think my pdoc wanted to keep me on it until we knew that Emsam was doing something, which it seems to be.

I also know that tardive dyskinesia can be a dose and time related side effect for AP's (I think less common with atypical AP's) and I don't want to risk getting that by taking some precautions, mainly dose reduction and time limitation.

I'll ask my doc about this next mon. I'm sure he will understand my logic in doing this...SG

I cut the pill of 25mg with a cutter. How do you cut the pill?

Is there a way to take even less than 12,5mg?

The only other way that this can be done would be to mix it in something liquid and then divide this up and save the liquid in the 'fr*g. But then you get into drug stability, etc.

I did this once, per my pdoc instruction. It's easier to use a pill cutter, but there always the problem with uneven splits, but at that dose, it really doesn't matter. 12.5 is really a very small dose, but you could try to split the half and get 6.25 mg dose. That's great if it is effective. Less is always the goal...SG

I will be the first on this board to say that every med affects everyone differently. However, after trying 30+ meds over the past 10 years, it is my opinion that Seroquel will most certainly help everyone with sleep IF (and I repeat IF) they are not taking any other meds, which might cause a chemical mixture that results in the direct opposite effect (probably not, but maybe).

The great thing about Seroquel is that you will know whether or not Seroquel will work for you within 1-2 days, not 4-6 weeks.

Now, there are tradeoffs. It does make me more tired throughout the day, which I have to balance with caffeine. But not feeling as much anxiety anymore is worth it.

I'm glad the Seroquel is working so well for your daughter Phillipa. About a month or two ago it was only working for four hours if I remember correctly. It would only work for four hours for me when I tried it. Did she just persevere with it or did she increase the dose? I would like to know how she got it to work so well...

I wish it had worked for me...

As I said im my e-mail to you she never has taken psych meds so the 50mg is working well. No it is not her that was only getting four hours sleep. That may have happened a few times to her but I'm the one. No med yet has gotten past the four hour mark. So I save some of the bedtime dose of valium for when the four hours awakens me. Love Phillipa

The problem with Seroquel being a miracle drug, however, is that you can't keep taking it for a very long period of time because of the risk of diabetes and tardive dyskinesia.

While you're in a good state, you may want to look up those possibilities so that you can make an educated decision. Some studies have shown that as many as 70% of schizophrenics show signs of tardive dyskinesia because of exposure to these drugs.

Hopefully your doctor has already warned you of these issues and I'm not the first to say this.
