I saw that other pdoc and am shocked he refused to take me as a patient. Said it was his choice. That it was a small office and go back to old one. I called her and told her my endo just called and thyroid so messed up two doses of synthroid one for three days one for four days then blookwork. It's too low. And the old pdoc said to just stay on the same low doses of meds. What do I do as the luvox is subtheraputic at 25mg. And no energy at all. And getting angry cause I feel so bad. Did this ever happen to anyone else and what did you do if anything? Love Phillipa the biggest loser I guess

That really stinks. I've had pdoc's tell me that I was a *pain in the a##* to medicate and tell me they were out of their league and I've had to find someone else if I wanted to be able to try any more meds. I have had tdoc's refuse to see my son because he was more than they wanted to tackle. It does hurt when the ones who need help the most are the ones that docs are first to kick to the curb. I have found some wonderful ones along the way but I've had some toads too.

I am stunned too. Isn't this the one that your daughter goes to? The one that had written the book?
He's right, it is his choice I guess since he is in private practice.
Did he give any reason other than it was his choice?
sorry, that really sucks.

One more thing, maybe once they get your thyroid back to normal he will consider you then?
You are not a loser. HE is the loser.
Stupid doctor.

That is shocking. If it had been me, I would have aksed him if he only took patients that were well...or some equally wiseassy comment. Please don't take it personally; there are a lot of "unique" pdocs in practice. Better to find out what type of person he is now that several hundred dollars later...

I would also be upset. One time I had a pdoc tell me that it would be better for me to find someone closer to where I lived (he was about 25 miles away) and had inherited me from another pdoc who moved to Maine. Well I was insulted, but found a much better, closer woman doctor whom I like and she is now director of the outpatient psychiatry where I go, so what seemed bad at the time turned out well. I hope the same for you, Phillipa.
Love,
Val

On one hand Phillipa I am so sorry for the turmoil you are enduring from the idiot pdoc. On the other hand I am elated you are not be treated by someone like that.
What you want is someone who is gung-ho about their work, someone who loves a challenge, someone who loves people. This guy obviously was none of those things.
I don't know how you find pdocs or how you found this one. But the one you really need may be outside the circle you have been looking at. Don't be afraid to keep looking, and to look in places you haven't already. The best pdoc I ever had was found when I called them one by one out of the yellow pages and asked them a few questions on the phone. It took a little while. If I couldn't get past a secretary, forget that one. Most of them I got to, and after talking to them all it was obvious which ones I wanted and which I didn't.
Best to you. I'll be thinking of you.

Maddie first yes the doc my Daughter sees. He's definitely not like his book. He only wants patients that respond to SSRI's and SSNRI's. And I am lucky as the endocrinologist has me on two different doses of synthroid. I called the pdoc I am currently seeing the 5hour drive one. Didn't say I'd seen anothe pdoc but told her about the thyroid. She said she had a lady they tried everything on and it wasn't till her thyroid was functioning well that she could be "fixed" with psch meds. She said to just stick to what I'm doing for the time being. And leaves it up to me so I think it is lucky. And she's the one who gave me EMSAM should I ever chose to try it. And has tried trileptal and lamictal with me too. And never gets angry at me. I think it definitely was for the best. She's the one I see definitely not benzo phobic either. Thanks for your supportive posts. I'm seeing things clearer now I think. Love Phillipa

Sounds like the other pdoc is very good. I had a terrible experinence lately and I am glad to be rid of the jerk. I trust you will be better off too. It is sad that he only wnats people that respond to certain meds. Doesn't sound like he is doing too much "doctoring" is he? What a hack, you are better off and deserve BETTER too. Hang in there.

Could it be because he thinks it would be a conflict of interest to treat both a mother and a daughter?
Also, when you say your thyroid is low, what lab result are you using to determine that? If TSH is low, taking more synthroid would only make things worse.

gg thought you were on vacation? Well no conflict of interest. He just wants simple patients nothing is used by him but SSRI's and SSNRI's and he does used atypical antipsychotics I read it in his book.Anyway the endocrinologist called me today with the results. Even on the lowered dose I'd taken for 3 weeks TSH and other thyroid were still too low. So he said to take the lower dose the GP had prescribed those weeks ago after I practically begged him to do a thyroid panel 3 days a week and ordered an even lower dose for 4 days a week. Then in I think not sure we need to call back and check 6 weeks more bloodwork. I didn't know the TSH came from the pituitary he taught me that and my cortisol level was okay. It's wierd though as when my TSH was high I lost weight had energy and anxiety was obvious now that I'm considered hyperthyroid I'm gaining, no energy only want to sleep, horrible mood swings I get angry then I'm sorry. I did call my pdoc I'm using when I got home and will continue to see her as she had that woman with messed up thyroid that nothing worked til fixed. What makes me mad is all these years all the docs that did the bloodwork said as long as my thyroid was in the normal range it didn't matter if I ate my breakfast which has yougurt calcium binds with thyroid. So I wonder how long I've really needed a lower dose. It would be wonderful to not need any anymore. The endo said I'd end up lower than this in the end. And the old pdoc said wait on meds til stable. Oh well. Love Phillipa thanks for taking the time you're all great.

Phillipa,
Maybe since you know so much about psych and depression, he felt that you might require more attention than a run of the mill patient, i.e. unipolar depression, first episode, unlike most of us here. Better to find out now rather than later that he can't handle anything other than an uncomplicated situational depression, treated successfuly with Prozac. Lucky person...
I'm curious about how the visit went, what was discussed, how did you present your situation, did did you connect with him on a personal level?
Sorry for your rejection but getting your thyroid under control is the first order of the day. Once that's done, perhaps we can try EMsam together and live happily everafter. Happy thoughts.

Lets exchange e-mails via babblemail. I'd love to talk more with you and keep up with the Emsam as I still have samples. Not totally convinced it won't work. I like the idea of a med you can see. A patch. Love Phillipa
