I have been diagnosed with delusional depression, but whenever I take anti-psychotics in therapeutic dosages, my condition gets worse. Is it possible that this is caused by the dopamine antagonistic properties of anti-psychotics? Or is it just a side-effect that will pass with time?

Hi,
I have experienced the same effect of APs on delusional depression- a small amount added to an AD made me more depressed and more delusional.
I don't know why but it may have to do with antidopaminergic activity. It would be interesting to see if anyone on this board has any thoughts about this.Nellie.

Thanks! Have you found any medication that works for you, and if yes, which one?

I am on celexa 30 mg now and it helps a lot. I still have delusional tendencies but am not overwhelmed by the contents of the delusions and am also able to doubt their being real. I guess that for now not adding other meds would be the lesser of two evils.
Are you taking an anti-depressant? Are there any meds that do help you?
Take care,
Nellie.

Amisulpride helped me a great deal, but I had to discontinue it due to elevated prolactin levels. Now I'm on 100 mg Zoloft, and it seems to help so far. I will probably have to increase the dosage, though.

Glad to hear the Zoloft is helping you. Do you find that this drug stops delusional thinking or just makes it more manageable?

More managable, but I hope increasing the dosage will help.
