I did a full trial of emsam all the way to 12 mg and it just didnt work for me. I wish all the best to those who are trying it now. Maybe it will be your magic bullet. It just wasnt meant to be for me.

I am deeply sorry to hear that.
Was there any point during treatment when you felt any improvement at all?
What's your next move?

So sorry to hear that Steve. Have you tryed Parnate..it can be a powerful antidepressent. If you don't want to go the MAOI ROUTE..Remeron can also be very effective. May God bless you.

You caught me.
:-)
Maprotiline is one of the few drugs I haven't tried. I guess I was turned off by its reputation for inferior efficacy and higher rate of side effects. Perhaps this reputation is unfounded. I don't know.
Effexor is one of those "must try" drugs as far as I'm concerned.

Why is effexor a must try drug Scott?? I took it for 2 days back in 2000 and went anorgasmic and blew it off, I wasnt that sick yet that I needed meds all the time. My how times have changed...

A large multicenter double blind controlled trial demonstrated that Effexor was superior to SSRIs. It helped more people and produced a higher quality response. Other studies seem to support this. Lexapro appears to be the SSRI of choice, and nortriptyline the tricyclic of choice. Those are the impressions I get.

Hey Steve. Sorry to hear about the Emsam disappointment for you. You gave it your best shot. Enjoy eating anything you want again. Of the two candidates, I would favor a good 8 week trial of Effexor, at the highest dose you can tolerate. Effexor is not easy to get on or off of, but it has a good track record for both depression and anxiety, for those that have failed lots of other antidepressants, especially the SSRI's. I found the intial side effects to be very harsh, but they did decrease with time. Effexor can feel like a freezing cold shower and really punch a hole in recurrent depression, and often works faster than many of the other meds. Good Luck.
