Opioid apathy everlasting?

Posted by MrBrice on June 17, 2006, at 11:12:01

Hey guys,

I have to my regret a father who is using opioids to cure his alcohol-induced depression. Now he thinks he is doing allright but his life is so dull now. He can't even have a nice conversation anymore, he's not original anymore, the opiods have really made him so very apathic.
My docter agrees and says that opioids really make apathic people.

Now what I wonder: is thios apathy only there when u keep on using the stuff, or is it a reversible effect. When the opioid use stops, will he be able to return to his normal self again?
Or has he ruined his life for good?

thanks,
Brice

Which opioid is he taking? How old is he? People, through age, life and whatnot, frequently end up f*cked.
My take on opioid dependance and withdrawal is that tolerance is pretty well total and withdrawal lasts for ever, meaning that the apathy effect is likely to cut the other way when he stops or reduces.
Opiate lack is associated with bleakness and global dislike.

hey declan,

i dunno what opioid he's using, i'm just sure that he does it.

I hope he'll be able to get off tough, he once was a very well respected docter, in my eyes he really screwed it up very well.

In two short posts your disappointment and disgust with your father seem evident.

Perhaps he senses this too.
I'm sure he is doing his best right now and probably wishes he could be the father that would make you proud.

It sounds like you dad is suffering and is likely very depressed. It must be really hard for him to go from having so much respect and admiiration to the state he is in now.

Depression is a serious disease with significant mortality. So at the risk of hurting your feelings or misreading you, I implore you to help your Dad get proper care and support.

If he is suffering from depression he is ill and in need of treatment.

Peace,
Kaye

Your probably right kaye, and i try to help him, but he doestn't accept the help. I had my own pdoc call him to ask if he wanted to go to him, but he didn't want to do it...
I am myself very disappointed in my dad and i hope so very much that what he's doing now is not going to affect him for the rest of his life, it would be a shame...

peace,
Brice
