Has anyone tried Parnate but the side effects were too terrible, and were able to tolerate Nardil? That is the plan I am leaning toward. Any feedback would be deeply appreciated.

Hi Cerebus --Side effects are usually worst on Nardil than on Parnate. But it could depend on which type of side effects your more sensible. Give us the side effects that you had on Parnate so we can compare with Nardil.

I tried Parnate for 2 weeks. Side effects from this were horrible. Extreme GI disturbances were the main side effect: Constipation, Diarrhea, Cramping. Before I tried Parnate, I was cycling through alot of other medications trying to find the magic pill. I have been on Effexor for the past 2.5 years, just now coming off this to try Nardil. Was wondering if it was worth the time and effort. I have GAD, Social Phobia, probably Social Phobia worse. Thanks for all the support.

Simply put, there are people who respond to Nardil who do not respond to Parnate.
Regarding side effects, I found Nardil to produce more hypotension, delayed micturition, and anorgasmia as compared to Parnate. These seem to get better the longer you are on the drug.
On paper, Nardil looks like a more effective drug for you than does Effexor. I guess you have to decide whether or not it is worth the gamble. What would you lose if Nardil proves ineffective?

I havent't tried Nardil yet, but when I first tried Parnate I hade explosive diarrhea for about 3 weeks, then it went away with minimal remaining side effects. Maybe if you continued a bit longer the GI problems would have went away.

>I agree with Naughtypuppy. I find the longer i'm on Parnate the less side-effects i have. Sometimes we have to *wait out* some adverse side effects of meds, as they sometimes dissapear, and then all that's left is the beneficial properties of the med. My pdoc calls it pushing through..I find more often than not it worksfor me. :)

Hi,
IMHO a combination of Nardil with clonazepam is about as good as it gets for knocking out social anxiety. Nardil is also the Gold standard for atypical depression. As always "your mileage may vary". But, for treatment resistant atypical depression with social anxiety, you won't see much better results than Nardil with clonazepam.
Good luck,
JediPS Parnate did nothing for me; we are all so different.

This is true, we are all different. I also have atypical depression and social phobia, Nardil didn't help me at all, but Parnate sure has. Just have to try them to see what works best for you. But, a 2wk. trial is not long enough, unfortunately 4-6, sometimes 8 wks are needed for a therapeutic response.

If I have, or am prone to, depression I might want to use a different benzodiazepine. Clonazepam can be so depressogenic, it certainly is for me. (Not for everyone.)
Also I've never seen any studies that compared Nardil vs. other MAOIs for atypical depression although I can't say I've really looked either. So, one might work better than the other, Nardil isn't necessarily better in this regard.
That's my understanding anyway!
