Do you think byetta would make it possible for someone to take zyprexa without the weight gain and possible diabetes?

Possibly. But..its a 2X daily injection (hard to deal with--also, there are compliance issues) and its new (read: expensive). A better option for zyprexa users is probably Metformin (Glucophage)...its also for diabetes and some docs use it in "pre-diabetes" and various other metabolic syndromes. It helps the body use insulin more efficiently, and its available in generic form (and is a pill, which is much more convenient than using an injectable). Apparently some docs already rx it along with zyprexa (I don't know if they do this at the start of therapy or only after problems pop up), and the results seem good...apparently, some patients find the Metformin helps with mood swings, probably by correcting some sort of low-level metabolic problem. As for the weight gain/loss...I imagine metformin could help prevent weight gain on zyprexa, but I don't know what effect it would have on someone who had already gained a lot of weight on the med.
