I'm BP2 with depression and need to take an antidepressant. I like Wellbutrin but it makes me very agitated. Has anyone combined Wellbutrin with a mood stabilizer and had any success?
Sincerely
Reed

hey! yeah, ive combined stimulating ads with mood-stabilizers..it can help smooth things out, but I'd only do it if you're BP and need the mood stabilization, too; otherwise, just change the AD, or add something like prozac or buspar.

Thanks I'm definitely BP and need the stabilizer. I like Wellbutrin because it has less sexual side-effects. Do you think Trileptal would do the job? It seems a bit milder than the rest of mood stabilizer, I hate side effects.

possibly; i like low-to-midrange trileptal personally (600-900; 1200 for intense episodes only). But it really depends...some people need more anti-manic action, some people dont find it helps that that much. On the plus side, it doesn't really mess too much with blood levels of other drugs, so adjusting dosages won't be as troublesome as with depakote or tegretol.
If you need something NOW you could try an atypical antipsychotic for a little while, until your mood stabilizer of choice kicks in.

Thanks med empowered, I appreciate your advice. Trileptal and Klonopin are the only mood stabilizers I can tolerate. I'm thinking of experimenting with them along with low-dose prozac and/or Wellbutrin and possibly something to help me sleep. I feel like a drug addict...but whatever works.

I've found lamictal to be over stimulating. I was afraid to use it with wellbutrin. Do you take anything for sleep?

> ReedI also have Periodic Leg Movements during Sleep (PLMS), so I take 0.125 mg of Mirapex 1 hr. before sleep. I tried Lunesta with so so results, but may try it again. Rozerem has helped me fall asleep, but doesn't help me stay asleep. I use it only occasionally.
When I was on Parnate for roughly 14 years, I took 2 mg of Klonopin near bedtime the entire time, without any problems, and relatively good sleep.
