has T3 or T4 suplementation helped anyone????

Posted by bipolarspectrum on February 25, 2006, at 23:55:17

Hello,
I'm looking for something to boost my lithium and seroquel for bipolar depression... has anyone had success with either t3 and/or t4??
I'm doing a little reading and who knows, there could be something there..

I'm hypothyroid so I take T4 on a daily basis. But about 10 years ago I took T3 - Cytomel, and yes it did help my depression. I have asked my endocrinologist to allow me to take T3 with the T4 but he is against it. Sigh.

But yes, I think it's worth a try.

Yes. I asked my endo to give me half as T4 and half as T3- aiming for a TSH of .5 to 1.0. I notice that it DEFINITELY helps my depression. Many people don't convert T4 to T3 efficiently- and T3 is the form which our bodies use. Give it a try, but do watch out for osteoporosis, and do whatever you need not to develop it.

I wish my endo would let me take the T3. You're lucky.

There is an excellent article about the benefits of using half of what you need as T3 in a New England Journal of Medicine from 1999. Giving it to my endo was what made him willing to do it. I'm sorry that I don't have the reference, as it's not in Medline or Medscape. But I think you can google it and find it pretty easily.
