Considering asking about stimulants?

Posted by Racer on February 19, 2006, at 17:47:45

I just started taking Provigil again -- on my own, just taking what I had left over from when I really was on it -- but I know what it does for me, and it's not going to be an answer. (Mostly because I need a nap every day when I take it. Figure that one out, huh?) But it does help -- it mostly helps with the intrusive thoughts that get me wild with shame and guilt, which sets off the anxiety, etc. It also brightens my mood a bit, but that part stopped being true, thus stopping the drug. I also slept much better when I was on Provigil.

So, since Provigil resembles something helpful so closely, I was wondering if an actual stimulant might help? I think it's worth talking to the doctor about it, at least? Does anyone have any experience to share? And anyone got any thoughts on which stimulant might be best to try first?

Thanks...

Hi Racer.

I have to say I am a fan of Adderall XR mainly because is wears off slowly. I have tried Ritalin, Ritalin SR, Dexedrine, and Dexedrine spansules. All of them make me crash and it's not a good feeling. I have become suicidal at times. So if you are looking for something "smooth" go for the Adderall.

As to whether or not it will help your current situation, I don't know. But anything is worth a try. I still think you should try Parnate.

Hugs,
Maxime

Thanks, Maxie. Parnate is not an option for a while, because we're trying to have a baby. Whatever I do right now is going to be a bandaid -- just enough to get me through a couple of months, because I'm having surgery next month to try to fix the infertility, and then have to wait out another cycle or so. During that time, I would really like to feel halfway human, if possible. I even thought about asking to go through the SSRIs again, or something like that. Just something, just to feel better. But I'm thinking that stims might be a good choice about now, since the Provigil comes so close to being really good.

Besides, I'd have a really hard time giving up soy sauce. It's in all our stir fries, and many of our other meals. {sigh} Not sure how I feel about it, but it's on the list...

Re. the Parnate. I can understand why you wouldn't want to start it if you are planning on having a baby. But re. soy sauce, there is a sauce made by Bragg http://www.bragg.com/products/liquidaminos.html that is made of amino acids and tastes just like soy sauce. :-) I had a bad reaction to soy sauce on Parnate, but no problem with the Bragg sauce (even though it's made from soybeans).

I think it would be worth discussing with your doctor about. I must also apologize for the reply I gave to you a few weeks ago if you remember it. I was way out of line. I didn't mean any of it that I said. I was angry at something else that happened on that day and I redirected it randomly onto you.

Thank you. I don't remember the exchange, but it's very nice of you to apologize.
