i was wondering what helps severe hoarding. they mention a lot with OCD symptomology, but that SSRIs most often do not help. are there meds known to help?

maybe even luvox or anafranil with a small dose of antipsychotic such as risperdal.

>Luvox in my experience has been the most effective SSRI I've ever taken for OCD. But for such a disorder, CBT has to be taken into account too. (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). You can put an SSRI up the wazoo but you'll never learn the tools to deal with a lifelong illness, namely OCD. Rubbish hoarding was a brief part of my reperatoire. One has to have a psychologist with a tough stance, and a plan to deal with a particular type of OCD. Okay, this week, we're going to remove 10% of the rubbish from the room. It will be hard, I will sympathize with you, but its necessary to be done. And so on, and soon one begins to gather the tools they need to deal with an illness that will wax and wane throughout life. I had the worst OCD (washing) at one point that a doctor had ever seen -- 39 on YBOCS (Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale). Eventually 2 and a half months of unfun hospitalization and an outpatient day treatment program with CBT and medication evaporated it. Today, yes, I still think about things related to the bathroom, but they float and exit my mind. I've conquered that type.
An excellent book for those who are suffering or those who have family members suffering is
The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Washing : The Experience and Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, by Judith L. Rapoport.

In reply to well, looks like nothing helps. great. (nm), posted by iforgotmypassword on February 8, 2006, at 16:18:05
No, a lot helps, trust me. As I said, I had the worst OCD a well known expert on it ever saw. And I conquered it. You can too. (This sounds like a radio ad but its possible with much effort and compassion from those around you.) I ended up working for their department after I finished treatment. It was enlightening. CBT is a very powerful addon to medicine, or you can say medicine is a powerful addon to CBT. Tons more is known about OCD now due to people like Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz, MD. and Lewis R. Baxter, Jr, MD, to name a few. The OC Foundation in New Haven, CT is an excellent jumpoff. ( http://www.ocfoundation.org/ ). Up to 2% of the population suffers from some degree of the OC Spectrum Disorders.
I encourage you to read that book and explore the OC Foundation.
Tidings and cheers

apparently it is not uncommon that hoarders are non-OCD, though there is a presumed relation in symptomologies there is showing to be a huge difference neurologically. the hoarding syndrome with it's rigid pyschological factors, in and of itself, is completely expressed in me.
i have also seen psychologists for a long time. CBT has done nothing for any aspect of my life, and it seems i am often referred back to it simply for the sake of MDs being able to drop my case, rather than out of any actual feeling that it could help, as they tend to simply say it's due to my mysterious lack of co-operation and refuse to elaborate further.
This is the end of the thread.
