I'm slowly creeping up my dosage of depakote for Cyclothemia. My pdoc wants me on a higher dose than normal. (I've always had a VERY high tolerance to medications).
Anyway, I'm now up to 1000mg daily , upped from 750 a few days ago. I've been noticing some things but not sure if it's in my head (no pun intended) or directly from the depakote. The main two things I've been noticing are slight muscle reactions slowing down....i.e. occasionly brushing up against doorwalls, stumbling over a step , etc. The other thing is a bit of akathisia. Talking to people at work, when I'm not interested in their conversation, I get so fed up I just say I have to go do something and take a walk because I can't stand still and listen to somebody babble on. Is this common to beginning a drug such as depakote?
Thanks so much!

I should add....
I do take Serax for social anxiety ( which we're hoping to taper off if depakote can help that)....so that obviously may have something to do with the "muscle latency" for lack of a better term). (Although with serax alone I never felt those things, so that is why I think the depakote has something to do with it.)
Then of course there is still the akathisia that I'm relaly hoping is the depakote because it can be a very uncomfortable feeling and i'd like to know exactly what it's coming from.
Thanks again all!

Hi
>stumbling over a step
Yes, it's probably a side effect. Sounds like a mild form of ataxia - anticonvulsants can cause this, as can benzos.

AFAIK, it tends to persist to some extent. At least that's what seems to happen in people with epilepsy.
