coffee is...good?

Posted by med_empowered on December 6, 2005, at 0:14:49

OK, good news for people who drink coffee (this would be most people), especially people with mental "issues," since we tend to drink considerably more coffee than the average person. Coffee isn't so bad. It might even be...(gasp) good for you!

Apparently, coffee can prevent Parkison's. It can also reduce the risk of Diabetes type II, and it seems to reduce the risk of cirrohsis of the liver in people with risk factors (heavy alcohol drinking...I imagine it might help those of us on liver-killing meds, but who knows). Plus, there's apparently a reduced risk of suicide in people who drink coffee. The downside is that apparently boiled coffee has stuff in it that can boost the heart attack risk...apparently, filtering the coffee, as is standard in the US, eliminates this risk. yay!!!

I'm too lazy to site all the stuff I've seen on this...google "health benefits of coffee" and you'll see some interesting sites/news articles.

it's a good thing caffeine is good, cause i live off the stuff.

i take a 200 mg vivarin first thing in the am. then i go back to bed, but don't sleep through my multiple alarms (which i do without caffeine or ritalin, similarly fast acting, to raise my arousal threshold).

i drink coffee all day long. currently on 300 mg provigil, which makes me feel like a human till the wee hours of the night (for me, about 7 pm).

What about anxiety associated with drinking caffeine? I love coffee but am afraid of it. Fondly, Phillipa

I wish coffee worked for me. I get jacked up for a bit, then crash, get real tired. My anxiety doubles and for about an hour of tolerable energy, I spend the rest of the day wondering why the hell I had drank it.

I seem to have a cup when I'm having one of my better days, when I feel like I'm normal like others that enjoy a cup. After all, there's a Starbucks on every corner. But all I end up doing is recking the rest of my day.

For those like me, I think provigil is a better option.

I think coffee helps my depression but doesn't help my anxiety.

I am down to only one cup per day (in the morning) and am trying to wean off completely to just see if I do better with my physical ailments.

I read somewhere it can cause inflammation which is not good for lupus or fibromyalgia.

hey! yeah, coffee/caffeine probably isn't good for everyone. What surprised me was studies saying that beyond the caffeine content coffee could have some health benefits...I guess I was surprised b/c so many health professionals seem wary of coffee, and "new age" health people seem to utterly despise the stuff.

Coffe can depleat inositol, which may be why many report that it can have a 'grounding' effect on the mood.

A "grounding" effect?..In what way?..I get intial anxiety from 2 cups then it seems to help me through the day..I've always wondered if coffee has anything to do with depression as I've never gone off of it long enough to find out..I remember reading a book called "caffeine blues" where the author mentioned coffee as a cause of depression..

coffee can be a cause of depression no doubt. since we are talking about a disorder whose etiology is unknown, these claims are very difficult to prove wrong.

caffeine for me is necessary, but not sufficient, to function.
