It's my understanding that selegiline works better on anxiety when it is delivered via the patch (EMSAM) than it does in pill form. Perhaps it's do to it's delevery straight to the blood/brain and by avoiding the gut, less side affects.

Selegeline is probably not really a powerful anti-anxiety agent.
Working mainly on MAO-B, it will increase concentrations of PEA. An endogenious amphtetamine like compound, that has been known to make people nervous and a little paranoid.
I think that it would be similar to wellbutrin, in terms of anxiolytic/anxiogeneic profile.
But I havn't taken it so I don't really know for sure.

Doesn't EMSAM also work on MAO-A at higher doses, the 20, 30 & 40mg patch doses?

Don't know, but then you have food restrictions

It's my understanding that even at higher doses 20mgs and up it does work on both MAO-A & MAO-B, but doesn't have food restrictions because it's delivered via the patch and doesn't go through the gut.

You may be correct, I just know that this was part of the issue with the FDA. I wish there was more info out there, but I just did a medline search and there isn't much.

Selegiline has several metabolites, at least two of which are the levo-rotatory isomers of amphetamines. Unlike the dextro-rotatory isomers (e.g., dextroamphetamine), the levo- isomers are known to have more of an effect in the peripheral nervous system. The dextro- isomers are more active in the CNS or central nervous system. Some of the levo- isomers' peripheral effects are unpleasant (tremors, anxiety, more cardiovascular side effects); however, the levo-amphetamines that Selegiline metabolizes into are not major metabolites and, as several others here have mentioned, the patch is supposed to cause fewer side effects than the oral form, so I guess you'll just have to try it when it is available.

Here is an excellent Power Point Presentation that answeres lots of questions on EMAM.
