do BENZO Reduce DOPAMINE level?

Posted by jgm on October 31, 2005, at 12:37:01

Hi to all and apoligize for my strange question.
I was on benzo for lot of months, and time after time i feel a strange effect that i can't express well but i am thiking it is similar to a kind of "dopaminergic reduction". Can't say it exactly because it is quite subtile but somehow i feel like all my "emotional energy" were reduced.
Could be that Benzo affect dopamine too?
Thanks you all indeed.

I think so, yeah. Benzos boost GABA, which in turn inhibits activity in the brain..there's a reduction in levels of neurotransmitters, which helps with anxiety (especially short-term), but can cause/worsen depression long-term. High-dose benzos have also been investiaged as potential antipsychotics, with conflicting (but sometimes positive) results, so it would appear they can dampen dopamine. The effect also varies from benzo to benzo; xanax, for instance, can help with depression, while tranxene and klonopin seem to worsen or induce it, which can be problematic. Good luck!

Med what about l5mg of valium daily? I am very unemotional . Couldn't cry if I wanted to. Also taking luvox which I just read is contraindicated with valium which came as a shock. Andy suggestions for an old lady like Me? Fonly, Phillipa

Hi Phillipa, my nutritional doctor told me that benzos or diazepam (can't remember) reduce melatonin synthesis, which might be problematic for benzo using insomniacs. I'm going to do a melatonin saliver test, 3 times in one night.....Before going to sleep, on first awakening, and when I get up. On 2 different nights.
