Going from SSRIs to MAOIs, any thoughts

Posted by gibber on October 21, 2005, at 10:31:21

Hi everybody. I'm on 20mg of prozac and 100mg of stattera and not seeing much benefit. I have gone through a slew of meds...couple SSRIs, wellbrutrin, mirapex, effexor and now the time has come for MAOIs. I'm tossing around the pros and cons of parnate, nardil, and selegiline and really haven't come to any real conclusion. The wash out period coming up will be the first med free period in about two years. I'm a little nervous but also curious. I had a short break from lexapro a while back and remember anxiety coming back pretty bad. But all in all I really have had no anxiety for a while. I'm wondering how other people have faired during their wash out period. Can anyone suggest any suppliments I might try (with dosages) during this period. I have had very limited success with 5htp, vitamins, 7-keto, etc. I would dx my depression as 'atypical' and I'm not sure why I haven't been tried on MAOIs sooner given there appearent effectiveness with atypicals. My cognitive function is poor and thought selegiline would be good for that, but not sure. Any suggestions? I have no trouble sleeping but don't feel very well rested most of the time. I'm concerned about REM suppression on MAOIs. I recently had a sleep study and it said I may not be getting enough REM phase sleep. THis could be because of the current meds or a symptom of depression. This is a great board! Thanks for any input.

First med free period in two years? I wouldn't worry too much, you might actually feel better for awhile. I got off meds this summer and felt better for a few months, but my anxiety always comes back. It's like a monkey hanging around my neck that I can't shake off!
I wouldn't recommend anything except working out for your washout period. 5-HTP, Valerian, Kava Kava are seriously a waste. I don't think many people have much success with them.
"Atypical" meaning you sleep a lot, eat a lot, feel good when someone compliments you, etc. That's what I have. It's actually pretty typical!
MAOI's aren't the best meds bar none for atypical depression. Most docs think they can cure all of their patients with SSRI's so they won't even bother with MAOI's, which have more risks. Some doctors don't even prescribe it even for those with treatment resistance. Maybe they like us because we come back every week with another check in our hands! I would hope not.....

Anyway, I would definitely give Nardil a try. It's a wonderful med.

Thanks CK for your input. You said there ARE better or good meds for atypicals other than MAOIs. What might they be? This wash out could be good for me, I expect I'll probably have more energy for one. I'm fortunate to have a doctor who's comfortable with a lot of meds here in Boston. It did take a little persuasion to get him to rx MAOIs though.

My bad. MAOI's ARE the best meds for atypical bar none!

Does anyone find that MAOIs produce the emotional flatness that SSRIs are so notorious for?

On the contrary, I found that Parnate made me more romantic much to the delight of my lady friend!

I've never felt flat on Nardil.
