Well i dont exactly have problem with being ignored but it does bother me.

I dont know what to say, but

Xanax?

Dexedrine?

Hi Matt,

Nardil would probably be best.

PS. Are you actually being ignored?

Hi

Do you have any degree of social anxiety?

For me, fear of rejection plays a large part in my social anxiety. It's like I 'know' people do not/will not like me. With Nardil, I never really cared what others thought of me anymore. A few times (when on Nardil) I've been in a situation where I've asked a girl out and been rejected, only to simply shrug it off and chuckle to myself and friends about it afterwards.

Also, I've been known to tell people exactly what I thought of them whilst on Nardil and that felt good (at the time). Easy way to loose friends though.

All the best. Kev.

Hi,
I would definitely NOT start with Xanax. You have a wide variety of options. Nardil is one.

Well Nixon,

I have been esculated up over time, this was a period of 6-7 months.

I was Ativan (Lorazepam) 6mg (2mg X 3) daily for panic, it did not stop these phobic thoughts, it would take the edge off but not the panic.

Klonopin really can make me depressed which is why im not really a big fan of it.

I have been to The United Methodist Mental hostpitol and evaulated by the a State of Texas Examinaner. She told me 3 times i wasnt crazy. I still didnt belive her. There where other "out of reality" people that where around me in the lobby. It really freaked me out that i would go crazy.

Hi,
I have had Social Anxiety Disorder since I was a teenager. I am now 48 years old and have been on medication for this and treatment resistant atypical depression for 9 years. The only med that has worked for me is Nardil. I believe it is still the gold standard for treatment resistant atypical depression and social anxiety. I seriously doubt if any PDOC will start you on a MAOI without first going through the SSRIs, the safer GABA enhancing meds, and probably several others. Actually, for this disorder, Nardil should probably be the 2nd tier choice.

I wish I had started getting treatment when I was your age. I know I missed some really big opportunities over the years, because of the disorder. In high school I was so afraid of rejection, I never once asked a girl out. Even in college I had to hear that the girl was interested, usually through one of her friends, before I would risk asking her out. In fact, I met my wife that way. We've been together 23 years, thank God for matchmakers.

Self-medication with alcohol is common with this disorder. I was a problem drinker from the ages of 17 to 25. People perceive that the alcohol makes them less anxious in social situations. Why else would you have the pre-function before the big party.
Good Luck,
Jedi

DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA FOR SOCIAL PHOBIA
Social phobia* is diagnosed if the person meets all of the following criteria:

A. A marked and persistent fear of one or more social or performance situations in which the person is exposed to unfamiliar people or to possible scrutiny by others. The individual fears that he or she will act in a way (or show anxiety symptoms) that will be humiliating or embarrassing.

B. Exposure to the feared social situation almost invariably provokes anxiety, which may take the form of a situationally bound or situationally predisposed panic attack.

C. The person recognizes that the fear is excessive or unreasonable.

D. The feared social or performance situations are avoided or else are endured with intense anxiety or distress.

E. The avoidance, anxious anticipation, or distress in the feared social or performance situation(s) interferes significantly with the person's normal routine, occupational (academic) functioning, or social activities or relationships, or there is marked distress about having the phobia.

F. In individuals under the age of 18, the duration is at least 6 months.

G. The fear or avoidance is not the result of the direct physiological effects of a substance or a general medical condition and is not better accounted for by another mental disorder.

H. If a general medical condition or another mental disorder is present, the fear in Criterion A is unrelated to it.

*Social phobia may be specific to one or a few social situations or generalized to most social situations.

Hey Jedi,

Nardil has been the only medication to really break my anxiety/atypical depression. I have taken it on and off for 5 years (currently off nardil and trying zoloft/klonopin/selegiline/lithium). How do you deal with the weight gain, sexual dysfunction and memory loss of nardil? Thank you!

Smith

Hi Smith,
Sounds like our diagnosis and symptoms are really similar. Out of at least 25 different combinations of meds, Nardil is the only one to give some relief. The only way I've been able to handle the weight gain is with about two hours of exercise a day. I hike in the foothills around our little town, and use poles to take the weight off of my knees. Even with this, I've developed chondromalacia patella. This is a breakdown of the cartilage under the kneecap. This condition is aggravated by the weight gain associated with atypical depression and the Nardil carbohydrate cravings. When I was really sick, in bed with atypical depression, and not taking Nardil; I gained about 90 pounds. I've taken about half of that off but it is still a constant battle.

My sexual dysfunction with Nardil is mostly delay of orgasm. In me it seems to be completely dose related. I have almost no delay at 45mg, of course this dosage doses not provide the MAO inhibition to help my depression. My unhappy medium seems to be 75mg. I can orgasm after some delay, and it is still enough MAOI to keep me out of the black hole. At times when I need to up my dosage to 90mg or 105mg, ejaculation is extremely delayed or nonexistent. The only med prescribed to offset this was a short trial of Viagra. Of course this didn't help at all, because erection is not the problem.

I haven't noticed much in the way of memory problems other than being a little scatterbrained. Sometimes it takes me about three tries to get out of the house, but I think this is mostly a concentration problem. I do use lists to stay organized. I haven't advanced to the PDA yet. I also take 1mg of clonazepam daily. The benzodiazepines have some negative effects on memory also. I do find the clonazepam to be a good augmentor of the Nardil for anxiety.
Take care,
Jedi
