The celexa works!!

Posted by cherylann on July 24, 2005, at 11:49:54

I posted, I think about a week ago, that the panic was becoming unbearable, despite all the little tricks I use to combat them.
Well, it's been 3 days in a row now and it has totally subsided. And no side effects that are noticeable!
I'm so happy I was able to vent here and get the support to help me through.
Thanks everyone!

Oh I'm sorry I didn't see your previous post, though it sounds like you got positive response.
I started Celexa last May, and the first three weeks were unbelivable as far as unrelenting panic. It was so bad I ended up in the hospital out of my mind. I was quite surprised they didn't take me off of it, because I was in hell. They gave me benzos to keep my panic under control as I adjusted, and I needed to stay in the hospital, as I never would have stayed on the Celexa alone, after about two weeks, the change was amazing. Celexa has been a god send for me, though I never ever would have believed it at the beginning.
I'm glad you're doing well.

Hi Gabbii!

Sorry to cut in here but do you mind if I ask you something?

Celexa was horrible for you initially only because of the panic? I thought that it made your depression a lot worse at first too, no? I have a friend whose depression got a lot worse on an SSRI recently and I was thinking of your situation and wondering if she could hang in there whether it could all turn around for her. But if your problem was only the extreme panic, then it wouldn't pertain to her situation at all.

Everything actually, it was just the most hellish mind state, wigged out and depressed at the same time, I could *not* stop crying, unless I was so terrified I'd just walk around in a daze, shaking. Everything felt surreal, morbid, and absolutely hopeless.
I really can't describe it, and do it justice.
I think the best I can do is say that I never ever would have stayed on the stuff If I hadn't ended up in the hospital, and actually while I was waiting in the E.R, one of the nurses got a stretcher for me, so that i wouldn't have to wait with everyone else,it was that bad!

Thanks so much, gabster. That really is quite a story. I'm just amazed that they kept you on the Celexa and even more amazed that things turned around so much. I guess you never know with these meds when you should throw in the towel.

I hope you're surviving the summer all right.

Kara

P.S. miss you too!

Celexa/Lexapro is the only drug that I have taken in the past, and then started taking again after experimenting with others. The reason I stopped it at one point was due to tiredness. But now that I am on it along with Provigil, the tiredness is no longer a problem.

I beleive that Celexa and Lexapro combined was the most prescribed antidepressant in the United States in 2004. I think #2 was Zoloft and #3 was Paxil/generic paroxetine combined. But both Prozac and Effexor were also very high in sales.

Hi BillLL,
You said you were on Celexa/Lexapro. Which one are you on? I've taken both, although I spent much less time on Lexapro. Although Lexapro is one of the isomers of Celexa, and although both meds weren't any good for me, I did find considerable differences between the two, and I don't see them as necessarily interchangeable. I am interested to know which one you are currently on.

Hi Gabbii,

You and I had a conversation about your Celexa experience a few weeks ago. I do remember that you've been on Dexedrine for about 8 years (correct me if I'm wrong). When you began Celexa and were in the hospital, did they keep you on Dexedrine? Also, before you began Celexa, what were you taking besides Dexedrine? Were you taking Dexedrine as monotherapy or was it combined with an AD? You might have told me. I'm sorry I can't remember.

I was on Celexa for more than a year. Then when Lexapro first came out, I switched to it. My experience was that the Lexapro caused a bit less tiredness than Celexa.

When I then tried Cymbalta, it seemed to work a little better for me in terms of anxiety and depression, but I believe it caused me to occasionally lose my temper. That's why I switched back to Lexapro.

Hi BillLL,
Thanks for the information. I had a lot of fatigue on Celexa. I had fatigue on Lexapro, too, but I think that was because I couldn't sleep more than four hours a night when I was on it!

Oh Boy. I am about to start this same process. Since coming off of Celexa 6 months ago, I've been a wreck, but trying to get back on SSRI's I've had horrid panic. I finally had it out with my psychiatrist on the phone today and he said that I HAVE to do deal with the initial panic and it will get better. I don't know how I'm going to get through it and I am praying to God that it ends up working out like it did for you and the panic eventually subsides. I'm already having cycling panic attacks, so I can't imagine how this is going to get better with an SSRI. But here we go. Any advice on how to get through would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and God Bless us all with these intense and personal chemical experiments going on inside our bodies. SIGH.
