Hi everyone,

Can Celexa and similar meds cause iron deficiency?

Meg.

I don't know. Antidepressants may mask the symptoms.

Hi Meg,

I've been on SSRIs for about 15 years and haven't had any iron deficiency.

I don't think the AD cause iron deficiency, but I know that iron deficiency can be secondary to hypothyroidism. Have you had TSH and T3 and T4 checked?

I periodically become iron deficient, but I think it is due to a hypofunctioning thyroid. But I think the hypofunctioning thyroid is due to a hypofunctioning HPA axis. My routine lab tests all look fine, but I still have hypothyroid symptoms and low cortisol symptoms. The glands (thyroid and adrenal) function fine, but the feedback is messed up and I can't mount a good response to stress.

In any case, ask you doc about checking thyroid.

Thank you all (nm)

Hi Cairo,

I also have symptoms of hypothyroidism and low cortisol.
TSH was checked and seems to be fine. That considered, do you think it's important to check T3 and T4?
Thanks for your tip, I will look into it.
How are you managing your symptoms?

Meg.

Meg, hi. Do you have an iron deficiency? When I was on Celexa, my periods were heavier than usual. That could certainly cause anemia. I also had some other menstrual problems that I didn't have before or after I took Celexa. I assumed that Celexa caused the problem. I know that ssri's in general, and Zoloft in particular, can cause GI bleeding. SSRI's are often contraindicated in patients who are on anticoagulants. I know of two people who had massive GI bleeds when they were prescribed anticoagulants and Zoloft after having a stroke. If you are concerned or have symptoms, I think it's best to have periodic testing for iron, hemoglobin, ferritin, etc. If you are anemic, then it's best to get to the root of the cause and not necessarily assume it's the Celexa.
