I think ambien works the fastest. I have tried alot of sleep meds: Trazadone, Sonata, lunesta, etc. Ambien works the best but only for about 3 hours.

agreed- ambien is the fastest acting. but i wouldn't say it's the "deepest". i'd vote for trazadone on that one. it's too easy to wake up after a couple hours with ambien, which is really annoying. but i still go with ambien when i am lying there and just need to get the job done and go to bed. benzos are good, too, if you just need to rev down but that's not the main reason for using them. but there are times when a xanax is better for me than an ambien.

When I was given chloral hydrate it knocked me out at 5cc in about l5minutes. Then after a few years it required twice nightly doses. Fondly, Phillipa

It does for sure. Adding a little Halcion, although frowned upon by many doctors, does a great job of putting someone to sleep right away. The Ativan helps them remain asleep and avoid the rebound when the short-acting Halcion disappears from the blood stream. I used this combination to attack an otherwise intractable insomnia caused by treatment with Parnate + desipramine.
