Gosh, it seems like mine has never even heard of them, nor would dare try them.
And by the way, is it difficult to stay on all the restrictions? I was thinking about Nardil for depression/anxiety.

If your doctor doesn't seem to know about them, I would consider finding one who does.
I would bring in literature (article) on the effectiveness of the medication. If you do searches on www.medscape.com and other such sites you will find them. Also Depression Central talk about them under Treatment resistant depression. I'm sure there are people here who can provide you with some guidance.
I don't find the food restriction difficult to follow for two main reasons: I am vegetarian and many of the restricted foods don't effect me at all. You can try some of the "no-no" foods in small amounts and see how you do.
There is a YAHOO group just for people who take MAOI. Under groups just type in MAOI and it should be the only one. People there might have more hints on how to help you.
Good luck!

It might be helpful if you were to compile a list of the foods and drugs to avoid, print it out, and show your doctor that you are educated and fully capable of managing this medication.

States how safe MAOIs really are.

I take Parnate. Luckily I was living the U.S. at the time (I'm Canadian). If I had been here in Canada I am sure I would not be on one.
I literally went to at least 6 different pdocs until one said "yes". When I would walk into the appointment and they would ask "what brings you here?". I would tell them that I had been on over 40 different meds and that I had done a lot of research on MAOIs and I believed they would be right for me. When the 6th pdoc said "I totally agree. I use MAOIs for many of my patients and I think you would do well on one", I started to cry.
We picked Parnate because I don't do well on meds that are sedating. And the rest is history. Within 2 weeks of taking the med people at work were commenting that I seemed much happier. I just told them that I had finally adjusted to the move.
Then when I wanted to add a stimulant to the Parnate, I brought in articles to my pdoc here in Canada and he was willing to give it a go.
So that is how it came to be. :-)

Every doctor I have had has suggested them, but I am afraid of them. I don't think I could keep the strict diet, esp. since it involves cutting out, or down on chocolate and cheese (my faves). Maybe your doctor just wants to work with the newer medications with less side effects?

When suggesting MAOI's to me, my doctor was trying to "sell me" on the fact that it is a healthy diet, no preservatives, kind of like the raw food diet.

Heck, I still take in a ton of preservatives. I'm not sure what he was talking about. (I'm on Nardil).

He is a fool. Doctors are only human. Believe me, MAOIs are safe and EXTREMELY effective for anxiety and depression. Either get educated on their mechanism of anction, use a lot of big medical words around him.....maybe he will then give you the MAOI. Or find another doc...the MAOI's are worth it!

I would find a better psychopharmacologist. I took Nardil with reckless abandon and never had a problem. Parnate I noticed a bit more blood pressure issues with aged cheese products.
Everyone's different, but Nardil was fairly gentle.
