How do you fight Dry Mouth?

Posted by tampagirl70 on May 23, 2005, at 8:12:29

What can I do to help with dry mouth? I know the usual stuff - gum, mints, candy, drink more, etc. - but is there an over the counter med or something else I could take to help with it?

Making sure that you are hydrated - drinking a lot of water and limiting caffeine - can help take the edge off dry mouth. Our bodies can be a little dehydrated and we don't normally notice, but it suddenly become very noticeable when on some meds. Just a thought. I don't know about any actual medications to fight dry mouth. Having a constantly dry mouth is irritating, to say the least.

Good luck!

Yes there is and I can't remember the name of it, but there is a also a toothpaste as well. Ask the pharmacist. If not your dentist will have it.

It's really important to take care of this problem because you can get cavities from it. If I remember the name I will post it. Ask for artificial saliva and they will know what you want. It's odourless, colourless and flavourless.

Now I remember! It's called BIOTENE. Like I said they have a solution for your mouth, toothpaste and gum as well I think.

There is also some called "Oralbalance moisturizing gel", but I only found that once.

As I mentioned in my last post, if you can't find these things in your drugstore, ask your dentist.

Great link! I use the biotene toothpaste and I like it, although I did have many more cavities than usual at the dentist. :( Has anyone actually used any of these other products? What do you think of them?

I like the Biotene gum. It works a little better than regular gum (and it tastes good). I think I used an Orajel product once-it is probably similar to the biotene gel. It is a gel you put on your tongue or behind your lip. It works really well for the first few minutes, so its good when you are really uncomfortable, but its not so good long term.

I found that the med that gave me dry mouth (clonodine) only did so at a higher dose. I was able to reduce it slightly, still get good results, and have no dry mouth. Just a thought...

I have used the gel you put in your mouth. It's not that bad. I would rather use it than have my lips stick together when I talk which is really gross. I had to use it when I was taking tricyclics.

FYI, it's not included in that list, but if you're into the more natural approach, Tom's of Maine also just started making a dry-mouth toothpaste...

Yeh it's like a tablet, I wish I could remember the name or where my mom got it...I'll keep you posted. I've taken it a few times and it seems to work well enough.

i bought a thing of Biotene mouthwash due to drymouth from Nardil and it doesn't really seem to help at all. This is a really annoying problem for me too so i hope i can find something helpful.

Also, they say sucking on sugar-free candy (what? no thank you) or chewing sugar free gum is helpful. i think the latter would be really good, except that i think i might have read something awhile back about how chewing gum (even sugar-free) a lot is bad for your enamel (i think it was enamel) because the constant chewing eventually wears away at it.
But i'm not sure if i really did read this or if i'm just confusing it with something else. Ah my stupid memory.
Anyway does anyone have any knowledge or educated/insightful opinions on whether or not chewing sugar-free gum can be bad for your teeth at all?

Try teaching fittness classes, and running. I wish I knew! I have started just having crushed ice in a cup, and keeping that in my mouth as much as I can. I don't get choked on it, and it at least keeps my mouth from feeling like it's full of cotton. -L

For what it is worth, my dentist told me to chew sugarless gum to help w/ dry mouth, so she didn't seem to think it was a problem.

Also, I read on the packaging that biotene doesn't get rid of the dry mouth itself, but the bacteria associated w/ it. I've tried both the mouthwash and the toothpaste and I like the toothpaste MUCH better. Better taste and more pleasant in general.

I bought the Biotene mouthwash. I can't tell it increases moisture in the mouth at all once you spit it out. I think, though, it's only meant to keep you from getting more cavities from dry mouth.

Okay. The definitive answer. Straight from my psychiatrist.

Now you all owe me $160.00
