I was prescribed hydroxyzine for sleep because trazadone was just making me more depressed and irritable during the day. Hydroxyzine is apparently a antihistamine. Just one thing though, I hope to God it's effects are not like that of Diphenhydramine!!! can anyone tell me?

hi! I've been RX'd 200mgs hydroxyzine at nite time to help me sleep, and I like it. For me, the results are not like what you'd get from dipenhydramine/Benadryl...at first I had some vivid dreams and I was a little slow to go when I first got up, but that's about all the problems I've had...no big deal, really.

I'd forgotton about Hydroxyzine (Atarax). Yeah it's an anti-histamine - but it also has anti-anxiety, anti-nausea/vomiting and muscle relaxing actions. 200mg is usually the dose for insomnia. FOr me it worked pretty well - MUCH MUCH better than diphenhydramine - better sleep and hardly any hangover.

I know what it is and my sister and mom take very small doses for sleep and it works like a charm. (for them) I guess I would consider giving it another go but I already have a very hard time with dry mouth and throat at night and that is why I have'nt given it another shot.... even though its' an anti-histamine, does it still have the major s/e of drying you out even more? I take Flonase and Allegra-180 for allergies so I would'nt want to make things any worse.
can anybody comment or offer a solution. Even though I take 15mg of Valium at 9 or 10 pm a lot of the time I still don't go to sleep that easy and my p-doc wont rx me any more Ambien cuz he said the Valium should be doing the trick! I need desperately to get my sleep wake cycle back in order!

> SnapperFrom what I understand, all anthistamines have varying effects on the drying side effects (anti-cholinergic effects). Benadryl is probaby the strongest anticholinergic. I don't like to use that one for sleep because of that reason. It's been a long time since I tried hydroxyzine (about 20 years), so I can't remember how drying that one is. From what I remember, I don't recall any unusual drying effects. I'm thinking about asking my pdoc about using this one for sleep.

Valium relaxes, but if you can't sleep it doesn't help much, even if you take more. I use a bit of Valium, herbs (zizyphus, skullcap), and niacinamide, glycine, magnesium, calcium, melatonin, tryptophan, things like that. At least I don't have to ask my doc for anything else.
