Ok, starting my trileptal tonight. Looks like within 9 days i will be up to 600mg. Is this normal? Sure seems like it jumps from 150 to 600 pretty quick. Anyone else go up that fast?????

The second time I titrated up (I took a break from taking it and then started again), my psychiatrist did it that fast. One day I woke up and had severe blurred vision, dizziness, nausea, tremor ... I felt like I'd been hit by a truck. My advice is to go MUCH slower than that.

I wonder how many of us would succeed on a med if we did do it more slowly that the pdocs tell us to. I really think slow is better. Like the lamictal rash. If you go up slowly it is less likely to occurr according to other posters. Fondly, Phillipa

My daughter is starting very slowely. She's only taking 75mg per night. We are breaking the 150mg pills in half, and I don't know when she will be taking the entire pill. Her doctor said she must take it very slowely, just like she did the Topomax. (We had NO problems followed that titration). Maybe you should call the pharmacy, and ask about that. I always do, just for my own piece of mind. You can then decide for yourself what you want to do. -L

I was wondering if he is raising the dose so quickly because i am having hypomania/depressive episodes and its causing problems in my life. Right after the hypo episode i went into major depression, where i even cut myself. Maybe he is trying to even me out fast. I dont know...

hey! Yeah, if you're having **issues** shrinks tend to titrate at mad speed, which kinda sucks...I mean, the last thing you need when your mood sucks is to have drug side-effects, right? Plus, trileptal doesn't seem to have any effect on **acute** mania, hypomania, mixed-episodes, or depression; basically, it works well as maintenance treatment. Acute episodes are best treated with lithium, depakote, or an atypical antipsychotic...or Ascendin (weird, old-school tricyclic anti-depressant with anti-psychotic properties). Anyway, that said, your titration isn't too bad...I started at 300, went up to 450 a couple days later, then up to 600, and then to 900 in split doses (300AM/600PM). That said, only move as fast as **YOU** want too...think about it: all the doc does, really, is write prescriptions and set plans based on what they **think** will work well. They have MDs, which is nice, but they don't live in your body; you do. When push comes to shove, the patient should do what feels best and the doc should deal with it. Good luck!

I went on Trileptal and titrated very quickly -- from 300 m.g. for two days, then to 600 m.g.
It lifted my mood -- at the time I was fighting a pretty severe obsessive-depressive episode -- but it completely spaced me out and, worse, slowed to a halt my long-term memory. I couldn't recall my own ATM card number without thinking about it for several seconds. That was enough for me to quit taking it.

And that kind of impairment DOES NOT usually happen when the titration is slow, with an increase every week or two weeks. It's unfortunate that doctors don't realize this - that medication compliance would be SO MUCH HIGHER if the titrations were slower and side effects minimized.

Tonight is my last night for 150mg, then i go to 300 for 3 days, then 600 after. If i start to notice impairment etc. I will take it slower. I have an appt with him again in 2 weeks.
