Lexapro for BP Type 2 ??? Experiences pls

Posted by Maxime on April 1, 2005, at 1:13:05

Hi.

Lexapro is now available in Canada. Cool eh?

Has anyone had success using it to treat BP Type 2? SSRIs have not work well for me in the past except for Prozac. I am also worried about the dreaded weight gain. I used Celexa for two months and it did nothing for me (it did give me gas) Does that mean that Lexapro will not work either?

So? Anyone? Anyone?

Maxime

Déjà? C'est un vrai miracle ;-)

Well, i would not hold my breathe. You know, that is just another SSRI wannabe. Like Celexa, his little brother, Lexapro is the most selective SSRI. So almost no action on NE and DA. No big deal for depression but it might be a big gun for anxiety disorders, in my opinion.

Nevertheless, eating disorder and OCD go often hand in hand. So theorically, Lexapro shoud be useful in the treatment of these disorders.

Have a good day!

Though not diagnosed BPII, arguably my depression may be akin to it, as BP runs heavily in my family. Lexapro worked somewhat for me, but did not do the trick. I actually now suspect that it was actually the Risperdal, which I took simultaneously, was helping me and not the Lexapro. I have never tried Celexa, I have noted on the board that it is NOT necessarily the case that if Celexa doesn't work, then neither does Lexapro.
Lexapro was weight neutral for me. In fact, it seemed to counteract weight gain from Anafranil for me a little....

Very true. But I really need help with the depression. I don't have OCD. I am not all that anxious to try it because as I mentioned SSRI make me manic.

Thanks for the info Bango. It's interesting that APs seem to help you more with your depression. First the Risperdal and now the Abilify.

Yes, I was surprised at the level of help risperdal--the first AP I tried, did so much for me. I would NEVER have thought of taking an antipsychotic, but I was in the hospital in such a catatonic state that I did not care about anything. It took about 4 days to pull me out of it. I was also on Lexapro at the time, hence the slight uncertainty---did I begin feeling better because the Lexapro kicked in, or was it the risperdal alone? I noe suspect the latter, as I tried Lexapro alone months later and it did nothing for me. Either poop out or it never worked.

I am just switching for Paxil to Lexapro. I also take lamictal which is a mood stabilizer. So far I haven't had the paxil withdrawal symtoms. I problem is break through depression which occurs about every 4 days. I'm hoping it will do the trick. I've been on every anti-dep, plus tricyclids, MOAI'S and have had ECT (which didn't work much to the surprise of the pdocs). I also take a small dose of serequel at nite and I sleep like a log, because if I don't get restoritive sleep it can really mess me up, plus it will cause my fibormyalgia to flare up.

I think it's worth a full trial and I'm going to do that. Celexa did nothing for me but I'm still going to try this.

Celexa depressed me and I had absolutely no energy. I have to wonder if it was the lymes disease though as i was diagnosed at the same time. I went off of it and a few years later tried lexapro. It made me angry and agitated and my husband tried it and it made him laugh inappropriately. The pdoc said something about not being able to process P450 enzyme or something. I heard it was a cleaner celexa. Fondly, Phillipa

I was recently diagnosed with BP 2 BECAUSE of my experience with Lexapro.

Lexapro was the med from Hades for me.

It slung me into the weirdest cycling state of depression/anxiety/euphoria/dyshoric mania/hallucinations I could even describe.

TO me, Lexapro was what I imagine being on a bad acid trip would be like.

So nope, for this BP 2 girl it was NOT for me.

And according to the pdoc I saw, he claims if you are bp you should not take anything that directly messes with seratonin. I don't know if that's just his opinion or fact but he was pretty adamite about it.
